I’ve always been very interested in personality tests. I think it’s because I love the idea of teams working together and if I understand what makes individuals tick, I can more easily figure out how to get a group of individuals to work together toward a common goal.

Just in case you’re curious, I’m an ENFP according to Myers Brigg, a Number 7 (generalist, visionary) according to Enneagram and Orange in the True Colors Personality test.

Anyway, you have no idea how excited I was when I had the opportunity several years ago to attend a Body Language workshop facilitated by an experienced police investigator!

In this workshop we learned, among other things, how to tell when someone is being deceitful. To practice what we had learned, we were divided into groups of 3 or 4 people and given time to come up with two truths and one lie about ourselves and then try to catch each other in the lie. I was amazingly good at it!

I know that you don’t have the benefit of watching my body language but I thought it would be fun to share two truths and one lie about myself here and see if you can spot the lie. And in turn, I would love if you shared two truths and a lie about yourself in the comment section so I can try to catch you in a lie.

OK, ready? Here goes!

  1. I once saw Neil Young at a Tim Hortons.
  2. I once did a standup comedy routine at Yuk Yuks.
  3. I once auditioned for a small part in the movie Cadence.

So can you guess the lie?

Is it 1?

Is it 2?

Maybe it’s 3?

So….

What are your two truths and one lie?

When we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best in ourselves. – William Arthur Ward

In my professional life, one of my responsibilities is to proof written materials. In this role, I look for mistakes and fix what is wrong. In other words, I see what I’m looking for.

That’s my job.

But I try to be mindful about not looking for mistakes in other areas of my life.

When it comes to people, I work hard to look for what is right and good.

I am moved by their passions.

I spot the traits that I aspire to, and try to incorporate them.

I focus on their strengths and value the gifts they bring to the table.

And find joy in encouraging them to use their gifts.

There’s nothing more beautiful than watching someone shine in their natural abilities.

Bringing out the best in someone else brings you joy.

And it’s possible to do, even with people you may not particularly like!

It’s rather amazing how looking for the best in others can bring out the very best in you.

A pep talk to ME and hopefully YOU

unicorn

“C’mon!” says he

I am intrigued by personality tests and have filled out many over the years.

Some have struck a chord with me and others just seem way out there.

People have told me that I am courageous.

Truth is, I am often afraid but I am a dreamer and this often triumphs over my fears.

Following is an excerpt from one of the personality tests I’ve done.

It has often given me the courage to keep following my heart.

You are not afraid.

Even with headlines about war and mayhem and conniving and sinister people, you approach the world to embrace it, not to run from it.

Where other people anticipate danger in what may be lurking around the corner you expect to come across a unicorn or a marching band who will lead you to a mountain from which you’ll see things with brand new eyes.

I don’t know where I’d be without my dreams

It seems to me that every personality trait has a good side and a bad side.

Like the two sides of a coin – it depends how it lands in the toss.

For example, my daughter is a beautiful, gentle-spirited generous soul.

Once when she was around 12 or 13 she said that she wished she wasn’t so sensitive, that she was tougher – more like me.

Her feelings were easily hurt by what some people said about her. I remember telling her that there were two sides to this trait of hers.

One – she could be easily hurt,

and two – she would always be careful not to hurt another.

I asked her if she liked the latter about herself. She said she did.

I asked her if she could live without that quality and she said no.

It’s important to her to be caring.

This concept seems to work with every trait.

Say someone pays close attention to detail and takes the time to make sure everything is right.

If they’re an accountant this is awesome!

If you’re waiting for them to finally decide what to order on the menu (TICK TOCK), it can be crazy-making!

This brings me to one of my traits.

I’m impatient. Line-ups make my brain haemorrhage.

Traffic jams make me want to scream out loud.

Most of my life, I’ve been told I need to be more patient.

“Aha!”, you may be saying.

What possible good side exists with that trait? Well I’m glad you asked!

Impatient people are less resistant to change.

Impatient people see a goal and if they’re on board with it, it will soon be done.

Impatient people think on their feet and rarely look back when they’ve made a decision.

Ok now you may be thinking, “She’s just making excuses so she doesn’t have to change.”

Impatient is part of who I am. I’m not likely to change but I can adapt.

I can change my behaviour. I can have my little temper tantrum on the inside instead of lashing out at the closest living thing.

I can find ways to be productive or get other things done while I’m waiting for (fill in the blank).

Waiting just feels like a waste of time to an impatient person like me.

Michaela and me

And just as I asked my daughter once a few years back, I ask myself now:

Would I be willing to give up ‘the doer’ that I am so that I could be more patient?

And the answer is a resounding NO!

So I embrace this part of me.

I accept who I am.

But I do check my behaviour.

I am accountable to the people in my life and want to be respectful.

After all I want them to be respectful and accountable for their actions toward me too.

What’s the one trait you have that works for you?

What makes it beautiful?

How has it been ugly?
