If you want to gather honey, don’t kick over the beehive. -Dale Carnegie

Himalayan Honey Hunter

Himalayan Honey Hunter

I’ve heard it said that you can catch more flies with honey than you can with sh*t.

Yet for some reason we often choose the latter approach.

We come into a situation with our own agendas, asserting our views, demanding honey – in affect kicking the hive to make our point.

And we are surprised, or sometimes even hurt, when others fight against us.

It stings!

I mean can’t they see how brilliant our honey hunting idea is?

It’s all in the approach, don’t you think?

I’ve seen it many times in work situations; where it seems impossible to unite a group of people toward a common goal.

The simple truth is that when you show you’ve got someone’s back and you value the gifts that they bring to the table, people begin to have your back and value the gifts you bring to the table.

You can create a safe environment that fosters empowered teams who achieve beautiful things.

It’s the difference between drop-everything-you’re-doing-right-now-and-do-this-thing-for-me-and-make-it-snappy

and

Here’s-the-situation-and-I-immediately-thought-of-you-because-you’re-so-good-at-this-will-you-help-me-carry-out-this-project?

Wouldn’t you rather collaborate with willing team members than struggle with resentful ones?

When we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best in ourselves. – William Arthur Ward

In my professional life, one of my responsibilities is to proof written materials. In this role, I look for mistakes and fix what is wrong. In other words, I see what I’m looking for.

That’s my job.

But I try to be mindful about not looking for mistakes in other areas of my life.

When it comes to people, I work hard to look for what is right and good.

I am moved by their passions.

I spot the traits that I aspire to, and try to incorporate them.

I focus on their strengths and value the gifts they bring to the table.

And find joy in encouraging them to use their gifts.

There’s nothing more beautiful than watching someone shine in their natural abilities.

Bringing out the best in someone else brings you joy.

And it’s possible to do, even with people you may not particularly like!

It’s rather amazing how looking for the best in others can bring out the very best in you.

“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” – Greek proverb

untitled2Each generation, at some point, bemoans the world they have inherited from the previous generation. With their whole lives ahead of them, they vow to leave a better world for the next generation.

Then life happens.

The drive to provide for, and protect, their immediate tribe becomes priority. They  block out the injustices in the rest of the world, not entirely, but where these issues intersect their own survival – they choose to protect themselves.

This is not necessarily a bad thing.

This is how we have survived for tens of thousands of years.

We’re not really wired to think about 10, 50 or 100 years from now.

But perhaps in our old age, with our lives mostly behind us, we are freed up to think about future generations.

Perhaps then we are willing to plant the tree whose shade we will never personally enjoy.

I wonder what we could learn and what plans we would conceive if we listened to the idealistic dreams of the young and tempered them with the life-time wisdom of the aged.

Cat Food Is For People – Seth Godin

The above quote was the title of a recent post written by Godin.

He wrote that even the gifts we give others are at least as much about how they make us feel to give them, as they are about how the recipient of the gift feels.

He concluded by saying if cat food was really for cats it would come in mouse flavor.

Truth is, most of us wouldn’t buy mouse-meat cat food because it sounds disgusting, and since kitty doesn’t buy her own food, pet foods contain ingredients that appeal to us.

Seth’s post got me thinking how this phenomenon occurs in other ways.

Like when we view other cultures and their customs for example, we interpret them according to our own beliefs.

Often, especially when a certain custom offends our own sensibility, we want to enlighten our fellow humans with our version of what is right.

If you think about it, it’s kind of arrogant.

When we position our beliefs as superior over another’s beliefs, we lessen our ability to understand and care about them.

HerGifts

The monkey and ladybug on the hand-painted jewelry box

The ‘I love you’  knickknack and the LOVE candle.

The sunny mom plaque made in elementary school.

And that red scarf from Paris.

And the thousands of memories, smiles, encouragements, hugs and kisses my daughter has given me. Her wittiness, sarcasm and how it makes us laugh until we cry. The walks and talks and long drives.

And the time when:

  • she caught me crying and put her hands on my face and told me God would take care of us.
  • she looked me up and down and said, “..is that what you’re wearing?”
  • she ran back out of her room after the one and only spanking I ever gave her, to make sure I still loved her.
  • I read to her and she read to me.
  • we were laying on my bed and she told me about the boy she loved.
  • her eyes were filled with wonder at Disneyland.
  • we went to Pinantan Lake for summer vacation.
  • when we sang – no, screamed – along with Kelly Clarkson while on a road trip.
  • she watched them take blood from me so I could prove it wasn’t such a big deal.
  • she went to Starbucks and brought me my favourite coffee.
  • she wrote about me being her best friend.

You may find the worst enemy or best friend in yourself. ~ English Proverb

For most of my life I’ve known the words, “…the only person you can change is YOU.”

What I mean to say by ‘known’  is that I’d heard the words, they made sense, I’ve even said them on occasion.

You know how you can know something in your head but can’t fully understand it until you know it in your heart? Until it becomes a part of you?

During this process of pursuing my vision and mission over the last several months, these words have become a part of me and have found their way to my heart.

It stands to follow that you can also choose the things you decide to believe and say about yourself.

You can point out your shortfalls, beat yourself up for your failures and you can underestimate the value you bring to the world.

Or you can believe in your purpose. You can trust in your gifts and abilities and move toward your dreams with courage and conviction.

So which do you choose?

He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.”  ~ Epictetus

Gratefulness makes us happy – it’s scientifically proven!

If being grateful makes me happy, I want to be grateful every day – not just on Thanksgiving.

Below are just some of the things that fill me with gratitude:

  • The odds of conception are 15% – 25%. I was born. I am alive and well. Life is a gift I cherish.
  • I am loved by family and friends. No matter what comes my way, I am not alone.
  • I have the necessities of Life. Food in my stomach. A roof over my head.
  • The teachers and mentors who have taught me important life-lessons and encouraged me in my journey.
  • The opportunities I have had to help others along in their journey.
  • I live in this beautiful country of freedoms and rights.
  • I belong to a community of diverse people with unique gifts that can build a better world than we were born into.

The Other Bottom Line  is the name of a blog I hope to introduce to you soon. The name is based on the premise that money is not an organization’s only bottom line.

I believe that a healthy organization is a group of individuals that work together toward a common vision. In order for an organization to make a real, sustainable impact, it needs to engage its entire community.

A plant seemly overcoming all odds and reaching for the sunlight through a cement barrier. In the same way, when a community is engaged and working toward a common goal, anything is possible.

A plant fights for life by overcoming all odds and reaching for sunlight through a cement barrier in my parking lot.
In the same way, when a community is engaged and working toward a common purpose, anything is possible.

An organization succeeds when impassioned people motivate others to become engaged by inviting them to participate in fulfilling its mission.

The Other Bottom Line  will be a resource and a place to discuss non-profit workers, those they serve and the communities who are engaged with them.

Below are the beginnings of the foundational pieces for The Other Bottom Line.  Let me know what you think!

~

Vision: An engaged community

Mission: building capacity in non-profit organizations by encouraging them to invite like-minded people to become engaged with them.

Philosophy:

When an organization’s community is engaged, heart, soul and mind; the resources to support their mission will follow

When two or more people are passionate about a cause, project, mission, etc., and they work together using and valuing each other’s individual gifts and abilities, you create an engaged community. It makes sense to seek out those with a common heart and vision and employ their gifts toward a common purpose.

There really is no point in chasing after highly skilled people or wealthy donors in the hope that you will be able to convince them your cause is worthy if they don’t share your organization’s passion to fulfill its mission . Why spend your time coercing someone to believe in something that doesn’t interest them?

Rather encourage them to engage in an area that relates to their own passion and move on – after all, philanthropy is bigger than just one cause.

The organization’s mission should apply to everyone; from leadership and front-line workers to volunteers, funders and clients

Most organizations have a mission statement. Often their mission is thought of by staff as applying only to their clients/program users. The mission should apply to everyone.

For example I worked at an organization who looked after homeless people. Their mission statement was to mobilize the church and work with the community to compassionately respond to the needs of the less fortunate.

This mission was relevant for everyone from the board of directors and staff to the clients, volunteers and supporters. All were called upon to empower others to fulfill the organization’s mission.

Achieving sustainability through diversity of talents and funding sources

If every person has the same perspective most of the people are not necessary. It is an amazing thing to behold an organization that employs and values gifts and abilities at all levels from a diverse community made up of people with varying backgrounds and experiences.

Adopt the tested and best practices of others – there’s no need to re-invent the wheel

Non-profits need to, and often do, share with and learn from other organizations. If an organization does something well; it should share it with others. This benefits the greater community.

Keeping it to themselves does not give them an advantage. Being generous with information is its own reward.

And when an organization is diving into new waters, they would do well to talk to those who have been there before while also getting feedback from their engaged community.

It’s not about the organization; it’s about their community

What a shame it is when an organization focusses on its own needs over the needs and desires of its engaged community. ESGEE Musings  illustrates this well in this post that compares the customer service provided by two different airlines.

Too often organizations deem the latest technology or internal processes as more important than the experiences of those who want to be engaged with them.

This can result in their supporting community being unsure of how they can contribute and wondering if they bring any value at all to the organization. If organizations do not endeavor to understand the heart’s desire of their community or honour their contributions, someone who does will scoop them away.

It’s not about the organization. It’s about the community and facilitating a way for people who care, to engage with the organization without overwhelming them with difficult systems.

A community is like a ship, everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm. ~ Henrik Ibsen

I’m not sure I agree with the above statement.

A master of all traits?

A Master of all Traits?

Everyone has unique gifts and talents and no one can do everything.

Sure we can adapt and take on a different role for a period of time, or perhaps even forever, but we won’t be happy and we won’t do as good a job as could be done.

The other night we went to see a Reggae band. They were playing. We were dancing.

And every now and then the drummer broke into a burst of drum banging that had nothing to do with the music playing.

The band would stop, have a mini meeting on stage, switch instruments and start over.

It was pretty impressive how they could all play every instrument but they weren’t in tune with each other and it sure didn’t do anything for the listener or us poor Smucks who just wanted to dance.

~ DIANA’S ENORMOUS BOOK OF QUOTES ~

Does it make sense to you for everyone to be able to take the helm?

Why? Why not?
