On Thursday, August 31st, I boarded a plane for Washington, DC via Toronto, with Board Chair of Oxford House Foundation, Debra Johnstone, to attend the 19th Oxford House World Convention.

It was both inspiring and educational! While there, Debra and I took the opportunity to tour the National Mall. I have to say that the White House is smaller than I imagined it would be, but just as guarded as I had imagined. And the Lincoln Memorial which I have always wanted to visit, was grander than I’d ever imagined. In total we walked about 13km, and believe me, I was feeling it the next day!

Here are some photos I took at the National Mall and around our hotel.

Getting A Fresh Perspective in Cochrane, Alberta

On Sunday when I posted 10 Questions For When You’re Stuck, some of you commented with wonderful suggestions for getting unstuck.

Including Van over at vanbytheriver who suggested:

When I can, I get away, usually alone, where I can assess things more clearly. I always come back with a fresh perspective, after a few days, or even several hours.

It sounded good to me, so early on Sunday afternoon, I got into my recently repaired car with the intention of going to Bowness Park. Somewhere along the way I took a wrong turn and ended up on the Trans Canada Highway heading west toward the mountains. Providence perhaps?

So I went with the flow and decided to go to Cochrane.

Cochrane, Alberta is nestled in a valley, surrounded by Rocky View County, 36 km west of Calgary and about 100 km east of Banff. It is the second largest town in Alberta – with a population of 17,580.

I go there often during the summer – it’s so close – and once I even co-hosted a folk festival there!

Upon exiting my car, I heard music and wondered if the town of Cochrane had installed speakers along the main street. I soon discovered that a group of young violinists were entertaining the locals.

They were amazing!

While watching the girls perform, a local woman chatted me up – I love that about towns!

We talked about how amazing these young musicians were, the different cities and provinces we’d both visited in our lives and how we both loved it out west.

We parted ways, she to run errands, and me to cross the street for an ice cream cone at MacKay’s – you can read about their amazing family business history here. Their reputation for good homemade ice cream is known across Alberta!

Unfortunately, the line to get ice cream was stretching outside the store and down the block. Not wanting to wait in line, I walked on and discovered the Cochrane Coffee Traders shop. How had I missed this place after all these years?

Come on, what’s not to like about this beautiful building?
Quaint and cozy

I ordered a Cappuccino to go and found a bench on the main street from which to do some people-watching. It was a gorgeous day and the street was buzzing with activity. Most folks had MacKay’s ice cream in hand!

The street seems to have been built to facilitate community. Comfortable benches are present at each corner and are positioned in such a way as to encourage conversation, or as I’ve heard it called in Calgary – loitering.

Cochrane convinces me that I am definitely pro-loitering!

That’s the big draw of towns for me; the sense of community, the openness of strangers, their unique businesses and wares, and the architecture of their buildings.

Did this trip help me get unstuck or give me a fresh perspective on things, you ask?

Maybe not in the way I had hoped for, but in all the ways that are truly important – Thanks for the idea Van!

These days, we’re crammed into a plane like sardines.

…traveling by airplane was an amazing experience.

It was 1980 – the year I was to graduate from high school. As a gift to celebrate this milestone in my life, my dad, brother and I were flying to Germany to spend time with relatives.

Those of you who are in your 20s or 30s have no idea what a wonderful thing flying was back then. Let me paint a picture for you.

We arrived at the airport, tickets in hand  – these had been purchased far in advance of our trip by my dad from a travel agent at a travel agency. There were no extra or hidden fees.

We got in line to get our boarding passes and check our luggage. The line moved fairly quickly. They had just the right number of employees at the counters to accommodate the number of folks in line.

At the counter we showed our tickets and passports to the nice lady behind the counter. She printed our boarding passes and checked our luggage.

We were not charged for checking luggage.

In 1980 they somehow understood that if you were flying somewhere, you were probably staying for a while and would need a change of clothes or something. Yes. Luggage was part of your fare.

Once on the plane, we found our seats and sat down.

I’m 5′ 8″. Taller than the average woman. I have a 33″ in seam.

I sat down, pushed my carry-on under the seat in front of me and stretched out my legs. Yes, that’s right – I stretched out my legs! There had to be 5 or 6 inches of space between my knees and the seat in front of me.

There was also a lot of space between me and the person beside me. None of us were spilling out of our seats and encroaching the space of the other!

Flight attendants dropped by numerous times to offer us complementary pillows, or blankets, or drinks. Then they showed the onboard movie to everyone for free!

In the aisle, two people could easily pass each other on their way to, or back from the facilities that were spacious enough that you didn’t have to be a trained acrobat to use them.

I looked forward to meal time the most. Would I have roast beef with mashed potatoes, vegetables, gravy and a biscuit? Or would I have fried chicken with veggies and French fries? Or would I choose ham with veggies and scalloped potatoes?

It just all depended on what I had an appetite for.

Later, we were offered another beverage and a snack like crackers and cheese and slices of apple or something like that.

And just before landing, they came around with hot towels that we applied to our faces, cleansing our pores, refreshing us.

Yes, I’m old enough to remember when travelling by plane was an amazing experience.

How do you feel about be charged to bring luggage? Hidden fees that sometimes exceed the cost of the flight? Being crammed into your seats like sardines? Knowing that you may not be able to board your flight because the airline has been overbooked? Does anybody seriously like those cheesy gold fish snacks?

How To Distract People From the Fact that You Did Not Spend a Lot of Money on Their Gift

Imagine my delight when I found out in a private message via Facebook that my favourite Canadian, Scottish, Israeli friends were coming to Alberta, Canada for a visit!

I was beside myself with joy, eagerly anticipating their visit.

They arrived last Thursday and are staying with friends in Olds, about an hour’s drive away.

My favourite Canadian, Scottish, Israeli friends; George and Annie, contacted me on Sunday to let me know they were coming to Calgary on Monday.

Maybe I should explain why I call them my favourite Canadian, Scottish, Israeli friends before going on.

I’ve known George for 24 years. He met Annie who was born in Uganda, moved to Scotland with her family in her teens, went to school in England, then moved to Israel where she was working as a nurse, when he visited some years back. That’s where they met and they just clicked.

Are you still with me?

I met Annie when she visited Canada and her and George worked at Mountain Aire Lodge together just outside Sundre. George and Annie were married in Scotland and that’s where they currently live, close to Annie’s family.

Anyway, I was beside myself with joy, eagerly anticipating their visit and wanted to surprise them with a unique gift.

The trouble is I currently have more time than money. Luckily, I found a gift that was unique and would give them and others the giggles for years to come.

Although I chose a brilliant gift (I have to be careful here not to break my arm, patting myself on my back), it’s not an expensive gift. So what on earth could I do to distract them from the fact that I did not spend a lot of money on their gift?

Well fortunately, I currently have a lot of time on my hands to plot and be creative and I thought it might be helpful to others for me to share my technique.

What to do when you want to distract people from the fact that you did not spend a lot of money on their gift

Turn the Giving of the Gift into an event.

GET A BLANK CARD or make one with the cardboard from an old cereal box or something, whatever… and fill it to the hilt with lots of words. Just go on and on about nothing in particular.

I chose to ramble on about my thought processes at the time of purchasing their gift and ran through all the gift options I had considered and why I scrapped each, one-by-one, until I found THE gift that was now wrapped and on the table in front of them.

Next. Make them read the card out loud before opening the gift. Annie had reached past the card for the gift and I said, “Hey, hey read the card first!”

Hint: It is more fun for you if you write with small letters and present the card in a place where the lighting is poor.

GIFT PRESENTATION. Wrap the inexpensive gift in plain paper. Paper grocery bags work. Decorate the paper with drawings, clever words, stickers, buttons, uncooked macaroni, or left over Christmas bows. Let your imagination run wild!

Just look at the amazing results I got below using a white grocery bag and 4 dry erase markers!

Art and words on the front of the package

Art and words on the front of the package

I have actually been drawing that guy with the big nose behind a wall since I was a kid. I’ve drawn him at the end of letters. I’ve drawn him on the back of sealed envelopes when posting letters, I’ve drawn him on furniture – you name it.

I took this picture and texted it to my daughter and she texted back, “Hey, I remember that guy, you put that on all my birthday cards!

But I have never – and this is where it gets exciting – I have never drawn Mr. Big Nose from behind! Great idea or what?

Fortunately for me, the wrapped package had two sides, so when I was done with the front, I flipped it over and…

I took a picture of the back of the package and texted it to my daughter. She texted back, “Bahahahahahaha!”

Well there it was on the table in front of them. Annie started to unwrap it and I said, “Hey, hey look at the back!” So they looked. And they laughed. Annie unwrapped the gift carefully. She wanted to keep the paper. And they even loved the gift that I didn’t spend a lot of money on. In fact, I think they thought it was expensive, like $800 or something, whatever…

When did you last set aside some time to be creative? Let your imagination run wild? Do you have friends that you don’t see often because they live far away? When you do see them, do you just pick up where you left off?

Bonne Homme de Neige, Diana Schwenk, Hump Day Chronicles, Ontario, poutine, Quebec, Travel, Twerking

As you read this I have already landed in Quebec and may have travelled as far as the border of Quebec and Ontario.

Yes, I have returned to the great land of Maple syrup.

The land of fabled characters like Bonne Homme de Neige and Justin Trudeau.

The land where I grew up and partied hard on St. Jean de Baptiste Day and largely ignored Canada Day.

The land where the letter H is strangely silent – until, of course it’s not called for.

The land where tout la gang parle Francais et Anglais, les deux langues du Canada!

Yes I am, as you read this, within an 1 1/2 hour drive of our nation’s capital where our nation’s leader Stephen Harper declared that occasionally he Twerks with Obama.

Relax…relax, he meant tweet – mon Dieu!

But just in case you are concerned, the word from the White House is that Obama does not twerk!

Too bad – I think that would be kinda awesome….

Speaking of twerking (nice segue eh?)  My daughter posted the following picture on facebook the other day.miley

To which I promptly responded with a text to her. diana miley

To which she promptly responded “FACEBOOK!” and posted my text.

Well my friends as I re-visit the land that made me who I am today, I wish you peace and joy.

Know that even though I won’t be nosing around your posts for a week or so I will be thinking of you and missing you.

To end this post, let me leave you with the following video that (in all fun) pokes fun at Quebec.

A bientot mes amis!

I don’t know much about being a millionaire, but I’ll bet I’d be darling at it. Dorothy Parker

Most people who win $1,000,000 will spend it within a year. Fairly confident that my million would also be gone within a year, here’s how I would plan to spend it in ten chunks of $100,000.

My Travel/play fund

1. Invest in my daughter’s future. Because I love her.

2. My Mom and Dad. Because they’ve worked so hard all their lives and deserve some fun.

3. My brother and family. Because it might help them get ahead.

4. $10,000 for 10 friends. Because it would give me great joy.

5. Travel/play fund … just because.

6. ‘Random Acts of Kindness.’ One hundred $1,000 ones. Because of the smiles this would bring.

7. Toward my Retirement. Because it seems a wise choice.

8. Toward my savings. Because it seems another wise choice.

9. Toward a charity’s endownment fund. Because it would be the gift that keeps on giving.

10. Start a small tourism business in a third world country and hire locals. Because I love to build community.

Do the easy survey below and I may consider you for #4 and #6

Invest it? Share some? Blow it?
