road-rage3

All that obey-the-rules-of-the-road malarkey is overrated. It certainly doesn’t apply to you. I’ll get the gist of what your intentions are when you cut me off and thank me with a wave of your hand. Driving is boring otherwise. How else would I get my heart pumping like that first thing in the morning?  Better yet, it’s fun when you cut me off real close so that if I don’t hit the brake while checking my rearview for a tailgater and bracing for impact, you’ll sideswipe my front end.

But don’t just cut me off. No I don’t get the full affect that way. Slow right down the minute you get in front of me. Better yet, hit the brakes, and then signal you’re turning left (the order of events is important here) and hold me in that lane seemingly forever until you’re able to turn.

I mean you’re in a hurry to turn left right? I saw you in my rearview as you rushed up at warp speed and shot into the right lane, just barely missing my rear bumper. It’s like you were playing a race-car game, the way you navigated your car – sharp right, sharp left, BOOM in front of me and then stop.

I totally get it. If you had stayed behind me and then turned left, you’d have been delayed by nanoseconds…

But you know what really gets my circulation going and gives me that wide-open-road feeling? I love when I’m a few car lengths behind you on Memorial Drive and you got a good clip going and I got a good clip going and I’m feeling sorry for those people on our right who are pretty much crawling in line to exit on that ramp to Deerfoot North. Yeah the light ahead is green and you and me we’re gonna make it through that light – I can feel it – FREEDOM!

But wait. Quelle surprise – you want on that ramp too? I guess there’s no way you were gonna get stuck in that long line, NOOOOOO, not you. You’ve got important people to see and places to go. So you do what anyone else would do in that situation; you slam on the brake, mere metres from the exit and cut into that lane over the solid line like some modern-day Mario Andretti causing two lanes of traffic  – ours and theirs – to hit their brakes.

YEAH THAT’S JUST FREAKING BRILLIANT, YOU’RE QUITE THE DRIVER NIMROD, WHERE’D YOU GET YOUR LICENSE ANYWAY, FROM THE BUBBLE GUM MACHINE?

~ HUMP DAY CHRONICLES ~

If there was a dashboard cam recording me on my morning commute, it would be a funny thing to watch! For you that is, probably would embarrass me to see it. 😉

What’s your biggest traffic pet peeve?

Dear Would-Be Prime Ministers of Canada

Canada-sparklers

AND SO A FEDERAL ELECTION has been called…

I could go on and on about income splitting, Marijuana legalization, minimum wage increases, Trudeau’s pretty hair, Harper’s Helmut hair, or how most of Mulcair’s hair is on his face.

Or I could rant about the Keystone Pipeline, the Northern Gateway Pipeline or the one going through Quebec.

Moraine-Lake-canada-9727405-1024-768

I could write an essay about election advertising spending, retroactive laws, sneaky omnibus bills, freedom of speech for scientists, crooks in the Senate and who knows where else, fear mongering, Americanism, dragging Canadians into wars we have no business being in, bringing it to our doorstep and then pooh poohing all over our service men and women when they come home.

I could regale you with my thoughts on putting all our eggs into the Oil & Gas basket; a finite resource by the way (and the production thereof IS causing serious illnesses in Canadians and causing damage to our environment – that’s not even an arguable point anymore), without putting the same effort into developing alternative, or better yet, renewable energy.

images286AZ4XYI could point out that the trickle down theory is not working, that the poor are getting poorer, that the deaths of many aboriginal women continues to be swept under the rug, that our healthcare system is in huge trouble, the blatant disregard for our privacy and basic rights and how they are slowly being taken away from us; like putting a frog into a pot of water and gradually raising the heat, that by the time I retire, I’ll have a puny pension, my daughter won’t have one at all – all while you make sure that you have one, that my grandchildren may never know what a clean body of water looks like and my great-grandchildren will never see nature as I know it today.

I am angry. I have been angry for a long time about these and many other issues, but I’m not going to go there.  And I’m not going to buy into that bullshit that my voice means nothing anymore; that the government is a well-oiled machine that will just keep going like a bulldozer crushing everything in its path, regardless of opposition.

Instead, I’m going to shoot for the moon. I’m going to call you back to the basics would-be Prime Ministers.

I’m going to hold you accountable. You still work for the people, don’t you? Well I’m one of the people.

It’s time to break it down and build it up again.

Because I don’t think the government works anymore. I don’t believe in you anymore. I don’t trust you. I don’t think you remember the definition of democracy.

But go ahead and prove me wrong.

Make me believe you care about Canadians, all Canadians – present and future.

And here’s some little bonus tips for you. I’m not going to vote for the party that:

  • has the best commercials, in spite of what your polls, focus groups and publicists tell you
  • tells me who I shouldn’t vote for based on trivial grooming observations
  • asks me to stand with them, without telling me why I should
  • uses fear-mongering, bullying tactics or says that the loss of my privacy is for my own good
  • acts the most American
  • only cares about how they look and succeed in the short-term, while they’re in power, without considering future generations

*And don’t bother conducting a poll on the above mentioned items, I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in this.

Sincerely a weary Canadian, Diana Schwenk of Calgary, Alberta

~ HUMP DAY CHRONICLES ~

There are standards to which government, religion and higher education should be held. There are examples that politicians and principled businesspeople should endeavor to set, regardless of whether their peers are making that effort. There’s right and wrong, not just better or worse.

And there’s a word for recognizing and rising to that: leadership. We could use more of it. ~ NY Times, Weary of Relativity, May 23, 2015.

THE PC UPSET IS JUST THE THING you wanted to avoid, eh?

In your opinion the PCs and the Wild Rose should have merged because the combined seats that each party won would have added up to a majority government, right?

That’s why you crossed floor, you say…well that’s what you’re saying now.

Back then you fiercely opposed the PCs because they were just plain wrong about almost everything and then rather suddenly, over night it seemed, you could find no fault with the Prentice-led Government and crossed the floor just a few short days after lambasting others for doing that very thing!

Here’s what I think.

To borrow the words of another, “Somebody’s not very good with math” –  and I don’t mean the person the words were originally meant for.

The reason people voted the way they did may have more to do with the following:

  1. You created confusion when you crossed the floor. I actually think Wild Rose may have won had you not done that – heck, I’d been thinking of voting for you and I’m a Liberal! I would like to note that the Wild Rose party didn’t do too shabby in this election though, in spite of you.
  2. Most Albertans no longer trust the PCs – too many shady dealings and all. However, some still do have faith in the Wild Rose party and saw them as a better choice than the PCs. It’s NOT a given that a conservative majority would have resulted if everybody just listened to you. It’s possible that if the two parties had merged, the NDP would have won even more seats.

Yeah, I think your math is off, Danielle.

I think you crossing the floor was probably the last nail in the PC coffin.

And for that – at least – a lot of us are grateful to you.

Put that in your book.

WTH Danielle?

An open letter to Danielle Smith:

At first I was just confused.

I was sure I was hearing it wrong.

Now, the more I think about it, the angrier I get!

Just a week or two ago you ended a friendship with someone who crossed the floor to the PCs. You said she would have to answer to her constituents!

Here’s the kicker, Danielle. I’m from the east originally, a staunch Liberal.

But I noticed you.

You seemed to be a woman of, and for, the people.

You seemed to speak your mind, defend your party members when controversies arose. I began to like you! I thought to myself, that woman’s got integrity. I started to believe there could be honest politicians.

I was seriously considering voting Wildrose in the next election. Several friends whom I deeply respect were backing you and entering into politics under the Wildrose banner. Well I guess we can be thankful that you showed your true colours before we really started believing in you!

And then this. You cross the floor and urge other members to do the same?

WTH Danielle?

I don’t know what kind of back room meetings you’ve been attending. But I do know you’re not a woman for the people. You’re a woman for yourself! Did you strategize a better career move with your decision? Are you drawing a better a salary?

A co-worker told me today that her parents figured they should just get a bunch of folks to run as PC members and then cross the floor to the NDP party when they’re elected. And why not, it’s no more of a mockery than you’ve committed.

Turns out that you’re just full of the same you-know-what you’ve been accusing the PCs of all along!  I guess I’m back to voting for the least offensive person again in the next election.

As for you, you’ll be answering to your constituents, I imagine.

What a disappointment you’ve turned out to be.

These days, we’re crammed into a plane like sardines.

…traveling by airplane was an amazing experience.

It was 1980 – the year I was to graduate from high school. As a gift to celebrate this milestone in my life, my dad, brother and I were flying to Germany to spend time with relatives.

Those of you who are in your 20s or 30s have no idea what a wonderful thing flying was back then. Let me paint a picture for you.

We arrived at the airport, tickets in hand  – these had been purchased far in advance of our trip by my dad from a travel agent at a travel agency. There were no extra or hidden fees.

We got in line to get our boarding passes and check our luggage. The line moved fairly quickly. They had just the right number of employees at the counters to accommodate the number of folks in line.

At the counter we showed our tickets and passports to the nice lady behind the counter. She printed our boarding passes and checked our luggage.

We were not charged for checking luggage.

In 1980 they somehow understood that if you were flying somewhere, you were probably staying for a while and would need a change of clothes or something. Yes. Luggage was part of your fare.

Once on the plane, we found our seats and sat down.

I’m 5′ 8″. Taller than the average woman. I have a 33″ in seam.

I sat down, pushed my carry-on under the seat in front of me and stretched out my legs. Yes, that’s right – I stretched out my legs! There had to be 5 or 6 inches of space between my knees and the seat in front of me.

There was also a lot of space between me and the person beside me. None of us were spilling out of our seats and encroaching the space of the other!

Flight attendants dropped by numerous times to offer us complementary pillows, or blankets, or drinks. Then they showed the onboard movie to everyone for free!

In the aisle, two people could easily pass each other on their way to, or back from the facilities that were spacious enough that you didn’t have to be a trained acrobat to use them.

I looked forward to meal time the most. Would I have roast beef with mashed potatoes, vegetables, gravy and a biscuit? Or would I have fried chicken with veggies and French fries? Or would I choose ham with veggies and scalloped potatoes?

It just all depended on what I had an appetite for.

Later, we were offered another beverage and a snack like crackers and cheese and slices of apple or something like that.

And just before landing, they came around with hot towels that we applied to our faces, cleansing our pores, refreshing us.

Yes, I’m old enough to remember when travelling by plane was an amazing experience.

~ HUMP DAY CHRONICLES ~

How do you feel about be charged to bring luggage? Hidden fees that sometimes exceed the cost of the flight? Being crammed into your seats like sardines? Knowing that you may not be able to board your flight because the airline has been overbooked? Does anybody seriously like those cheesy gold fish snacks?

Downtown Seems More Dangerous

You know…I’m pretty easy-going most days. And I’m kind of proud of the fact that as I’ve matured, I’ve learned to keep my temper in check. But lately, there is one situation that’s just making me angrier by the minute. And today when I read about downtown seeming more dangerous, I lost my shit! But I’ll get to that in a minute.

High Line Park in New York

High Line Park in New York

I love Calgary. Most Calgarians are top shelf.  This city does a lot of things right. In fact, several weeks ago, the Beltline Community Association held a public event at a park on 11th Street SW just off 17th Ave.  They had some ideas on how to rebuild this park and wanted to know what the community thought. Brilliant – I love when Calgary does that!

They had several tables set up with different themes like creating a sports park, or more of a social park, or something that could change with the seasons; an ice rink in the winter, water park for the summer, etc.

I was making the rounds and one table showed a photo with a fire pit. I overheard a well-meaning lady tell the volunteer who was manning the table that she really liked the fire pit but it wouldn’t work; it would attract homeless people.

OK. LET ME BACK UP A BIT. Some of my new readers may not know that I’m somewhat of a champion for the underdog. And for over 20 years I worked at an organization that helped homeless people rise above their circumstances and achieve independence. I just couldn’t let that comment pass.

And so I asked her, “Shouldn’t homeless people have the right to relax and enjoy the beauty of a public park?” She quickly said “I didn’t mean that. It’s just that some people are drunk and belligerent.” “Oh, so it’s more a matter of drunk people behaving badly coming to the park? You are saying that people should be respectful of others in the park? And it’s not about economic status then?” “Yes,” she said. “Oh good, then I agree. People should indeed be respectful of others.”

The "20 minute" bench, Stephen Avenue Mall, Calgary, Alberta

The “20 minute” bench, Stephen Avenue Mall, Calgary, Alberta

Then a couple of days ago, my friend Helga and I met downtown at Olympic Plaza. It was a gorgeous sunny day and OP is located at the end of Steven Avenue Mall – a cobble-stoned street that is lined with a bunch of restaurants and retail businesses. After enjoying a nice long chat with a senior we had met, we decided to walk Stephen Avenue.

That’s when Helga showed me the new benches. These benches tilt forward and unless your feet are firmly planted on the ground, you will slide off. They are uncomfortable. They face the buildings instead of the street. They do nothing to make the core more vibrant or inviting. And I know in my heart they are designed to prevent homeless people from sleeping on them. They piss me off!

So I took to twitter. Hey #yyc what’s with the uncomfortable slanted benches facing buildings?

Their response to me was something like: We are testing out these benches to see if it cuts down on bad behaviours blah blah blah. They’re only meant to be sat on for 20 minutes.

Figures. Keep out the Riff Raff. Bully the marginalized. I get it.  I calmed down and let it go…

…that is until I read today’s Metro news.

After years of declining crime rates and improving perceptions of safety, downtown Calgary now appears to be getting more dangerous, according to a core-area city councillor.

Coun. Druh Farrell said Wednesday she’s noticed a “marked” change as of late and has become concerned for her own safety at some downtown LRT stations after regular business hours.

“I don’t feel comfortable taking the train, even at 6 o’clock,” she said. For the rest of the article click here.

It goes on to say that in the latest survey conducted in 2013 people feel safer downtown than they did in 2011. In spite of the fact that 96% of people feel safe riding the LRT during business hours and 72% feel safe after business hours, Farrell has noticed it’s getting worse. “Lots of Listerine is being consumed. It’s quite a state outside City Hall.”

She doesn’t come right out and say that ‘quite a state’ means ‘homeless people’ but it’s implied and she feels something needs to be done. She’s talked to police and bylaw and social agencies and no one is sure why there’s an increase.

Maybe because there isn’t one? You know like the survey says… you know like the crime stats say… (Palm Slap on my forehead)

If people aren’t nervous about being downtown these days, maybe Ms. Farrell’s fear mongering based on her own personal observations (that are obviously more reliable than actual stats and surveys) will change that perception.

Listen, I agree with one thing, this city does have an issue with homelessness. We all know people live on the streets. But uncomfortable benches and locking up public bathrooms and covering vents that push out warm air in the winter with stupid art so homeless people don’t sleep there is not going to fix it.

Why don’t you employ different tactics? Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is?  Why don’t you make a personal donation to an organization that is trying to give homeless people their dignity back? Why don’t you have an actual conversation with a homeless person? You might find out that they have a story, or they didn’t set out to have an addiction, or that they’re actually human beings.

In a city where there is great outrage when pets are treated inhumanely and investigations are launched to look into these situations so people can be held accountable for their actions, shouldn’t we have at least a portion of that compassion for fellow HUMAN BEINGS???

Yes downtown does seem more dangerous lately, but not for the reasons stated by Farrell. The real threat is ignorance and an absence of kindness, respect, common decency and a sense of duty to our neighbours whether they have a home or not!

RECENTLY MUSICIAN, NEIL YOUNG finished off his Honour the Treaties Concert Tour  in Calgary to support First Nations people in their legal fight with the Government.

Reactions in Alberta have ranged from how Young didn’t have the correct information to “he’s a musician and should just stick with what he knows.”

And don’t get me started on the comments about Young riding around on his tour bus. I’m sick of that being the go-to response  anytime somebody questions the affects of the oil and gas industry on our environment! What other alternative is there?

Various news media assure the world that most Canadians are in favour of the oil sands. What? Just because you report this, doesn’t make it true! Say it is so and it will be so?

Other messages inform us that the oil sands are only responsible for 1 part in (insert rather large number)  of toxic emissions in the world. It kinda sounds like an addict when he defends his addiction by saying, “I’m not as bad as that guy,” doesn’t it?

The point is, critics insinuated that Young should leave this subject to those who have been educated in this area and know what they’re doing.

Wait one fracking minute…

Does that mean Young’s opinion is null and void? So what if he got a few of the details wrong, anybody with eyes in their head can see that the oil sands are not good for the environment. Last time I looked, I was in Canada and I’m pretty sure that in Canada we are entitled to our opinions and have the right to express them.

If I’m to be honest, I’m nervous about the oil sands too. I’m scared about a pipeline in BC. I don’t know what that will mean to the environment, for migrating herds, for the food we eat. I can’t help but wonder if my great-grandchildren will ever see the glorious wonders I see today. And I’ll tell you something else – I bet I’m not the only one who is concerned!

I’m not totally naive though. I know we can’t just shut it all down. Can you imagine how that would affect our economy? The job loss would be horrendous; everyone from gas station employees to factory workers who manufacture gadgets made from oil byproducts would be affected.

But I do have some questions I think we should be asking ourselves. We know that there is a finite supply of oil in the world, right? One day we’ll have to look at alternatives, won’t we? Why aren’t we doing that in a more intentional way now? Why don’t we put at least as much  money as we pump into the oil sands into looking at alternative renewable energy sources? From a business perspective doesn’t doing this sooner rather than later make sense?

I say kudos to Neil for acting on his convictions and using his celebrity status to do so!

Let’s not pretend we are not damaging our environment. Let’s also agree it doesn’t make economic sense to shut it all down right now without a plan B. And concurrently, dear provincial and federal governments, put at least the same amount of effort into finding an alternative renewable energy source as you do with the oil and gas industry.

That’s what I think. If that puts me on the same tour bus as Neil, so be it.

Re: The Flu Season and what you’ve told us about it.

Let me begin by saying that I appreciate your attempt to communicate with Albertans. Really.

Also, I would like to extend my prayers for comfort and sympathy to those who have lost loved ones to the Flu.

Now, on to reason that I am writing to you and the business of keeping the public informed.

Please find following, a list of the messages you have shared with Albertans during the 2014 Flu season:

  • Everyone should get the Flu shot
  • Unless 90% of people get the Flu shot the larger population is compromised
  • The Province has enough Flu shots for 23% of the population
  • The Province is disheartened that only 42% of medical staff have gotten the Flu Shot
  • The Province says they’re not sure how effective the Flu shot is if under 85% of the population gets it.
  • 12 people have died from the Flu
  • 10 people have died from the Flu
  • 8 people have died from the Flu
  • Calgary has 2 centres offering the Flu shot. Some people wait 4 hours to get their shot.
  • People don’t have to panic. Really, we’re OK. Sure the more who get the Flu shot the better. (We’re really not sure what the threshold percentage is.)

WHAT???

Now I’m not saying that there isn’t a logical explanation for the contradictions above. You say you typically secure a certain amount of the vaccine and end up throwing some out because you’ve over estimated how many people will get their shots. I’ve also heard speculation that you were just way better at getting the ‘you-should-get-your-shot’  message out this year.

But you’ve got to admit that your messaging has created confusion and panic, and it doesn’t really matter if you have it all straight in your own heads if the rest of us don’t understand. Some of us, throughout this Flu season have felt manipulated by your messaging, at the very least, trust was broken.

Not being one to just point out errors, I thought I might also provide you some suggestions for next time.

A list of strategies you may consider for the next time:

  • Plan out and have your communication strategy ready by August
  • Get everybody who needs to be involved into the same room.
  • Get your facts and key messages down on paper and agree on them
  • Make sure your facts are accurate
  • Make sure everybody is singing from the same song sheet
  • Select your spokesperson(s) and make sure they’re well versed in your key messaging and can articulate the message clearly.
  • If your spokesperson(s) can’t stick to the accurate, thoroughly researched, factual key messages you’ve bothered to put together, consider releasing the information on a fact sheet and leave it at that.

While you’re at it, you may ask yourselves what the common areas of concern are, i.e., what’s in the flu shot, what are the risks, is it true there are fish byproducts in the vaccine and what if I’m allergic to fish, or eggs for that matter  questions and include that information in your messaging instead of directing people to a long dissertation that no one can find on your website.

And for pity’s sake, if you don’t know the answer to something, just say so and tell us you’re looking into it and will get back to us. And then ACTUALLY get back to us. We can respect that.

You’re welcome!

stampSorry for dropping the *‘F bomb’  but nothing else seems to articulate as clearly how miffed I am!

I’ve been known to say, “If I wanted to just do my job and it leave it there when I go home, I’d work for Canada Post.”

That’s because they do what they do pretty much in the same way they’ve always done it. If everything stayed the same forever, Canada Post has the perfect plan to run their organization.

Their beehive mentality and procedural methods work in a world where there is no change in demand for services.

But HELLO!!! Nothing stays the same forever!

Canada Post recently announced that they are ceasing door-to-door delivery for 1/3 of Canadians in urban areas.

Thousands of postal workers will lose their jobs.

Postage stamps that presently cost $0.65 will go up to $0.85 each when a book of stamps is purchased, and an astonishing, unbelievable rate of $1.00 when purchasing a singular stamp!

Canada Post states that it has lost millions in the last quarter and if they continue this way they will lose billions in a matter of a few short years.

Look. I understand cutbacks, really I do but I want to point out something important.

And that is the words: ‘if they continue this way’

Listen up Canada Post. This situation isn’t something that suddenly happened. You should have picked up this ball 20 years ago. You should have been asking yourself what’s going to happen to us with the dawn of the internet? You should have let your CEO go and hired a mover and shaker!

“The best time to plant an Oak tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is right now,”

Maybe it’s not too late!

Give the old guy the boot. Get a ‘Steve Jobs’  type in there and remind us of the joy we had when we received a handwritten letter. Start a movement that touches our hearts and saves the jobs of thousands! If you don’t do it, someone else will.

~ HUMP DAY CHRONICLES ~

* As you may have noticed, this post is a deviation from the usual uplifting style you have grown accustomed to. I promise to deliver my usual optimism and rose-coloured-glass’ismness tomorrow in a special bonus post! 🙂
