It’s Tuesday morning as I write this and set the WordPress schedule to publish automatically on Wednesday morning for the Hump Day Chronicles.
I’ve done that because this afternoon (Tuesday) I’m driving to Camrose to spend a couple of days with my daughter. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen her and I’m grateful she has Wednesday off so we can catch up and I can see her new place.
So for this week, I won’t be writing about the process I’m undergoing on what’s next for me and The Other Bottom Line. Instead, inspired by a tweet I read on Monday I want to write about being grateful.
Someone else is praying for the things you take for granted #StayGrateful
A few years back I had a conversation with a man who runs a street ministry in Toronto. I don’t remember everything we talked about but one thing he said stuck in my mind to this day. He said that 97% of the world considers me a millionaire.
The truth is while I may be wrestling with what I want to do with my life.
Others are struggling with where they will get their next meal; how they will survive one more day.
I may be looking around my apartment thinking I need to update its look.
Others are looking for shelter from the sun and rain under the awning of a building and being shooed away for loitering.
Maybe I’m struggling in personal relationships; fighting over unimportant issues, while others are completely alone with no one to talk to.
That Monday tweet was a timely reminder for me. I know I’m happier when I live my life from a place of gratefulness.
And I am grateful.
Grateful for family and good friends.
Grateful that I have a place to live and food in my belly.
Grateful for all the opportunities my life has extended to me.
Grateful for you and all the things I learn from you.
Grateful for the reminder that someone else is praying for the things I take for granted.

What struck me about my recent posts on finances after comments came in from others, is how fortunate I really am. Things may not be the way I envisioned my life would be, but there are people out there who are really struggling, who do not have any back-up (financial or emotional) and are living under constant stress.
It has also made me more grateful that I live in Australia where – in a worst case scenario – there is at least a safety net of basic standards for pensions and healthcare. Not so in other countries …….

That sense of where I really do stand in comfort (no, in luxury) level compared to the seven-billion people in the world… grateful hardly touches it. That doesn’t mean a little rain doesn’t fall into every life, but it does mean keeping a little perspective on things!

Oh, I am thinking with, ‘someone else is praying for something I may take for granted.’ it is difficult to be humble, and take what ‘little’ I believe I have, and be grateful. I must consider this in conscious thought on a daily basis. Train myself. Too easy to forget.

I’m trying to condition myself to think of all I have when I find myself wishing for more or feeling sorry for myself. Not that it’s wrong to have desires, but it’s good to be reminded of all the good things in one’s life.

That’s so true. We need to be grateful and remember what we already have. This morning as I pushed my two kiddos on a bike through the pouring rain, I was cursing over the crazy rainy weather. As we walked, a father walked by us with a boy about the same age as mine (5), the boy was paralyzed in his special chair. I teared up. I have more than enough, two perfectly active healthy kids and family, so I better check my gr(at)titude. Have fun with your daughter! 🙂

Glad you’re getting to visit your daughter. Mine leaves tomorrow for San Francisco… busy with packing and last minute stuff– and trying not to be tearful. (fearful?)
