There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.

Peter Drucker

Doing things that need to be done in a way that doesn’t make sense is one thing. At least you are doing things that need to be done.

Doing things that serve no purpose for the sole sake of just being busy with something is also a problem.

Not that I’ve never done that myself before. I tend to go there when I’m trying to avoid something!

In many organizations we document what we’re doing to show that we’re actually doing our jobs or to be accountable to our customers.

Fine. But how often do we ask ourselves why we are tracking the things we are doing, and once we have the information, how, or if, we will even use it?

It makes sense to be efficient, it’s something I strive for with the things that need to be done. Careful though, if doing something efficiently means that it is no longer effective, that’s a whole other can of beans you don’t want to open up!

“Common sense is instinct. Enough of it is genius.” – George Bernard Shaw

GOD  TRIBE  NECESSITIES  PURPOSE  HEALTH

It’s time for spring cleaning. It’s time to de-clutter.

And I’m not talking about my domicile.

There’s been some changes of late.

Things I’m excited about.

And other things that weigh on my heart – that with a little fixing – I may yet, be excited about.

And it strikes me that when I have a lot going on, whether it’s good or bad, the first things that get thrown by the wayside are the things that give me energy and life; the things that spiritually feed and sustain me.

So I’ve come back to the (above) five priorities I set for myself back in January 2014. Although the definitions under each have changed a little since then, these priorities are still a grounding force for me.

Common sense tells me I can’t keep doing everything I did before I started my wonderful new job and thus it’s time for spring cleaning so that I can focus on the things that are important to me.

What are your priorities? How do you create space to stay focused on them?

The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities….The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. ~ Stephen Covey

Is this you?

Is your life full of stuff? Is there so much going on you can’t hear yourself think? Is every person, everything vying for your attention?

Your family. Unpaid bills. Cupboards that need to be restocked. The car needs gas. Your house is falling apart. The toilet needs fixing. Your guilt. Your appointments.

Your life is falling apart. Your health. Your heart breaks. Your body aches. You’re not where you thought you’d be by now.

Job loss. Money problems. Work pressures. Your addictions. You’re getting old.

You fear you might go mad.

Now Imagine it’s all gone.

Everything gone.

The white noise is gone.

Silence – save for the sound of your own beating heart and breathing.

It’s dark.

You can’t see your hand in front of your face.

Lonely.

Nothing.

You fear you might go mad.

Now imagine you’re granted the return of 5 things.
