love

When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth.

Some say…

Love is a feeling dependent on current circumstances. Love is a made up human construct. Love is finicky. Love is possessing. Love hurts. Love doesn’t last. Love is a nice word for lust. Love must be earned. I’ll only love you if you love me. Love means you would take the blame for me. Love means I own you. Love makes you weak. Love is irrational.

Others say…

Love your neighbor as yourself. Love is a verb. Love is forever. Love is unconditional. Love is the answer to every question. Love is selfless. Love is letting go. Love is an act of your will. Love nourishes. Love wants the best for you. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love makes you strong. Love makes you feel like you belong.

I have heard so much about love and what it means to people. But never have I heard such an eloquent way to describe love as stated by 4-year old Billy in the above quote.

Love me when I least deserve it, because that’s when I really need it. ~ Swedish proverb

It is easy to love someone when all is well. When they’re meeting our expectations. When there exists a reciprocal flow of give and take between you and another.

Often, we associate love with a feeling.  The way we feel when we first meet our life partner. The way we feel when our children are born. The way we feel when someone pleases us.

Anyone who has ever been forgiven in spite of what they’ve done, or felt shame, yet saw love reflected in the eyes of another, or been held in a loving embrace when they’ve screwed up,  can tell you that love is most needed when it’s undeserved.

Love – real love – is much more than a feeling.

Love is an act of our will.

A promise to be there – always.

A commitment to bear witness to, and walk alongside another during, their most difficult trials.

A force that takes us beyond feeling and pushes us through difficult times, especially when we don’t feel like it.

And love is most needed when it’s least deserved.

I’d rather have a life of “OH WELLS” than a life of “WHAT IFS.” @FamousWomen

images3I caught the above quote as it flitted by on my Twitter feed the other day and it immediately spoke to me.

Because it’s easier for me to take my lumps in ‘oh wells’ than it is to take them in ‘what ifs.’

It also reminded me of a post I’d seen months ago (link below) about the regrets people have on their deathbed…

and my thoughts about the areas I need to work on; specifically regarding my personal relationships…

…areas I have been consciously and unconsciously working on since.

According to Bronnie Ware the Top 5 regrets people have on their deathbed are:

  1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself.
  2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.
  3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
  4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
  5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.
