Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going too fast – you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.
You’re probably not present in the moment either!
Ivan Decker, renown Canadian comedian says:
I hate escalators. I guess I don’t have escalator etiquette. Why do people get mad when you stand on the left side of escalators? What, you’re too busy to stand on moving stairs for 20 seconds? What do you do on elevators? Punch out the ceiling panel and climb up the cable?
I laugh because that’s me. It’s ridiculous but that’s exactly what I do!
What am I in such a rush for anyway? Why must I make it to the top first? Why is it important that I make the best possible time to work? That I load my shopping cart and make it to the checkout in record time? What will I miss in the future if I don’t push through the crowd right now?
I need to keep working on being present in the moment!

Do you rush toward some future task or are you present in the moment?

Diana I use to rush when I lived in the city, but there are no escalators near by any more and so life is a series of slowing down and being more aware and I love it. Learning to stop, feel, see, smell the world around me has been a passion of mine. In a field of flowers that is easy to do, maybe a bit challenging in the big city. But I always appreciated the smell of coffee brewing and I was an avid people watcher, curious as to where they were all going and what were they thinking.

Oh my gosh, I’m a huge people-watcher too Kath! I’m trying to be more intentional about slowing down, at least on the weekends. ❤

People are fascinating, I remember when I lived in London on Saturdays I would go sit at a cafe or a bus seat on Oxford St and watch life go by it was colourful and diverse people from every corner of the globe.

I’m definitely guilty of rushing through the present without taking sufficient time to just enjoy it. I’m always hurrying on to the next thing. This post is a good reminder that I need to slow down. Easier said than done…

I am a rusher. I have to admit. But not really because I’m trying to rush to or from anything. It’s just that I have 2 speeds, go, and stop. 🙂

haha I’ve gotten that impression Colleen! I wonder. Did one of, or both your parents rush? Sometimes we do things because our parents did them for a specific reason we know nothing about. We just do it, cause they did it. ❤

Hmmmm, on reflection I don’t see either of my parents as ‘rushers’. But I wonder if they would think they were?

There are some escalators that I can’t get on I don’t know why I just freeze and can’t get on and have to either take the lift or stairs if there is stairs and I am not going up a heap of flights.

A great reminder Diana! Sometimes a deep breath and standing still on the escalator, is all we need to call us back from our busy world and into this moment. 🙏🏻

I am a reformed rushoholic, which comes from my deep rooted controloholicism.
May this awareness help you slow down a bit Diana 😊
Maybe even choose to stand on the right and simply enjoy the ride!

Wait, what? Escalators have a walk-left stand-right thing? That’s… preposterous. I thought that was just for long flat walkways. You’re saying there are people who just have to walk up an escalator — a single flight of stairs — and this is encouraged?
I truly do not understand the world. 😮
At all. 😦
