The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.
We’ve been told that we should pursue our purpose.
But what if you don’t know what your purpose is?
I had dinner with an old friend last night to celebrate her newly acquired PhD. I’m proud of her, it’s been a long time coming!
This is an exciting time for her, but now what? Now that it’s done she wonders what she should do next; realizing she is no longer happy in her current job.
A job that I once had came up in the conversation. It was my first position after having left a career I had loved. I soon knew that this new position wasn’t the job for me. But having signed a contract I stayed for a year, all the while learning important skills I would need when I launched The Other Bottom Line. And I loved the work I did with my consultancy, all of it, except the marketing of myself!
I guess sometimes knowing what you don’t want is the beginning of understanding what you really want.

Good point Diana I think when I look back, every experience I collected over the years has brought me to the path I am on now. Sometimes we don’t know what we want or need and yes thats okay we can work it out as we go along.

That is hard not knowing what you want and even harder, how to get there. I’m actually abit afraid for my nephew since he will get his PhD next yr. or so. He hasn’t has a full-time paid job yet and is young, married (to an ambitious medical intern).
My nephew lost his mother (my sister a few years ago).

Waking up each morning and loving what you do is indeed a gift. Finding it can take many twists and turns in our life, I think if our purpose in life is meaningful and has a positive impact on others, we are definitely on the right path. Very wise Diana.

I like your great common sense last statement.
The one purpose we all share is to do something well. Whether as a brain surgeon or a florist, someone will be effected by it. They may as well have your best effort.

Diana, I’m thankful something good can come out of finding out what we don’t want to do. Great quote. And I appreciate the wisdom you showed by endeavoring to learn what you could while you kept your side of the contract. Life lessons and skills are always transferable.

What worked for me is trying different things and asking myself whether I liked them so much I’d do them for free. It’s a high bar to reach for, but I wasn’t happy in my other jobs and careers until I converted two hobbies I loved (and did for free) into paying careers. Now, I love what I do, still do both, and feel like I’m on vacation doing what I love all the time. Wealth management has been lucrative but I still manage assets for a lot of people at no cost to them or at far less than break-even for me. It’s not a sacrifice because I love what I do and I’ve learned that after a certain income level I’m no more or less happy than if I earned much more money. So as long as I’m at or above that level it’s all good. I know this for certain because there have been times where I’ve made twice as much money as I’m currently making, and I’ve never been happier than I am right now.

I never thought about it quite this way before – but I think that you are right that knowing what you don’t want is the beginning of knowing what you want. I tend to think that the process of getting from here to there is almost as important as the destination.

Sometimes we have to experience something in order to know it isn’t right for us. It’s a great opportunity to pause and understand what does make us feel alive and fulfilled in life. Without the plus,e so many move form one achievement to another without real insight into meaning and purpose.
On the other hand “purpose” is such a HUGE loaded word nowadays. It’s easy to get tied in knots trying to figure it out, and lose touch with our inner guide.

Good point Val. Our purpose is tied to who we are and in that sense, it may not even matter what your job is as long as you live your life true to who you are and within your driving force (purpose) ❤

That’s what happened to me, Diana. I thought I wanted to work in banking until a few years passed. I appreciated having the job and the pay cheque but ultimately it wasn’t what I wanted. Live and learn, I guess!
