You ever have one of those Oh-man-I-love-this-product experiences only to discover the next time you go to get some more that it’s been discontinued?
I don’t know when I was first introduced to them.
I can’t remember if I bought them at a market, or if someone made some and gave them to me. All I know is that I loved them.
I mean they got the job done.
THEY WERE AMAZING!!
And no word of a lie. For probably 30 years or more, every now and then, I’ve talked about them with someone.
I’d say things like: “Did you ever have them?
What did you think of them?
Aren’t they great?
Hey do you know where I could get some?”
And then I would resign myself again to the fact that they just don’t exist anymore…
More on them in a bit…
I first met Stephanie about 25 or so years ago. I was working at a Drop-In Coffee House for homeless people. Stephanie was one of many teenagers I got to know back then.
Truth is I don’t know much about how she ended up getting caught up in street culture, but I do remember looking into her face and thinking she was an old soul.
You ever meet a kid like that? I mean you look into her eyes and there’s a depth and knowledge in there; something you don’t usually see until someone’s been around for quite a bit longer than a teenager.
Then we lost touch.
Maybe 10 or so years later, she showed up again. She was in town and came by to say hi. Our organization had moved locations and was no longer a Drop In, but she found us.
No longer on the streets, she had changed her life. Now living on the west coast, she was a working mom taking care of her kids. I was so happy for her and so proud of how she was making a better life for her family.
Fast forward a few more years and Facebook comes along and we find each other again. And then one day recently, she posted a picture of THEM!
I’d thought they were gone forever, but there they were on my timeline. And Stephanie makes them!
I immediately commented on them, saying something like, “I love those! Nothing has ever worked for me like them!
In response, Stephanie sent me a private message, “What’s your address, I’ll send some to you?”
They arrived on Monday with a note that said something like, “Thanks for being there for me during hard times. I’m glad we’re still in touch.”
The feeling is mutual my dear Stephanie
Maybe you don’t know this, but I was struggling back then too – and people like you inspired me and made me want to be a better person.
Thank you for being there for me Stephanie.
And thank you for these awesome dish cloths and extras!

I’ve been so upset that breads I like keep getting discontinued that I wrote a whole post about it! I’ve also had to mourn the loss of several great salsas (I guess it’s no longer “America’s Favorite Condiment”), some great soups (Three Bean Chili soup — mmmm), and bakery-made iced molasses cookies.
And sometimes they change the packaging so much I think the product was discontinued because I didn’t notice the radically new look.
Change sucks! I want my molasses cookies!! 🐱

Haha You know, you bring up a good point. We get bored with our own branding but consistency is so important to our customers. We have to ask ourselves: what matters more? The customer? Or our desire to change up our packaging… ❤

I’ve often wondered why they do it. Feeling a need to update with changing times (rather than stay with an established known look)? Thinking they’ll get more new customers than lose old ones?
I dunno!

So great that you and Stephanie found each other again and things are going better for both of you. Haha, Diana, my DH’s aunt has been making these cloths for EVER!! And they’re always better if you knew the maker: ) Lovin’ the “hang-it-on-the-oven-door” hand towel and those coasters are just too cute; )
And YES, that also happens to me aLOT! Totally fall in love with this really great product and then, the next thing you know (Oh no! Really?!) it’s been discontinued):):

OK, you’ve got to make a deal with me Diana. No more writing stories that make me cry. But, then, I sometimes cry at the drop of a hat … so that might not be a logical thing to agree to. 😉
Beautiful post my friend. Thank heavens for those folks who inspire us and who have been in our corner for us helping us achieve our better selves.
On another note … about unable to find products you love. My local store, Publix, appears to constantly take beloved products off their shelves. My most recent – Kashi Heart to Heart cinnamon. Well, at another Public about 17 miles away (near where I work), I found it – on BOGO (Buy One Get One free). You better believe I scarfed up the last six boxes off the shelf and ran to check out with them. 😉

What a wonderful story. Sometimes you come across someone and help and inspire them and you need exactly the same, but they don’t know… It works both ways. Thanks for this inspiring story.

Thia is a wonderful part of you Diana, to know that it was when you were feeling vulnerable yourself and struggling, that you reached out with strength for someone else. I am inspired by you and your story.

Thanks Elizabeth. It really helps me to heal when I try to help others to heal.
But listen, all I really did was get to know her and enjoy her company. Back then we didn’t have a lot of resources to help people in practical ways. Steph did it herself. ❤

What a great story, that has come full-circle. Love it when that happens. I found the daughter of a friend on Facebook and was so happy to see her alive…her mother was given a life expectancy of 8 years for her due to inoperable brain tumors, she is now thriving in her 20’s. Amazing.❤️
p.s. Your post reminds me of all those potholders we made from a small loom with strips of colored fabric. I still have one in a box somewhere. ☺

Good for you! That happens all the time with stores– discontinuing products, etc. I wrote to the Dansko shoe company_( a couple blog posts ago) and they said to look for their new styles in January. Not exactly helpful!
