If you want to gather honey, don’t kick over the beehive. -Dale Carnegie
I’ve heard it said that you can catch more flies with honey than you can with sh*t.
Yet for some reason we often choose the latter approach.
We come into a situation with our own agendas, asserting our views, demanding honey – in affect kicking the hive to make our point.
And we are surprised, or sometimes even hurt, when others fight against us.
It stings!
I mean can’t they see how brilliant our honey hunting idea is?
It’s all in the approach, don’t you think?
I’ve seen it many times in work situations; where it seems impossible to unite a group of people toward a common goal.
The simple truth is that when you show you’ve got someone’s back and you value the gifts that they bring to the table, people begin to have your back and value the gifts you bring to the table.
You can create a safe environment that fosters empowered teams who achieve beautiful things.
It’s the difference between drop-everything-you’re-doing-right-now-and-do-this-thing-for-me-and-make-it-snappy
and
Here’s-the-situation-and-I-immediately-thought-of-you-because-you’re-so-good-at-this-will-you-help-me-carry-out-this-project?
~ DIANA’S ENORMOUS BOOK OF QUOTES ~
Wouldn’t you rather collaborate with willing team members than struggle with resentful ones?

This makes so much sense–and is so true. I also liked the Dale Carnegie quote that you used at the beginning of this post. I’d never heard it before.

Being on the same page is always most necessary on a team. So long as all are focused on the goal the problems encountered should be only those which are related to the task at hand.

Although I’ve always heard I t as “you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar… ” thinking that your version with “sh*t” would actually be more attractive to flies; ). But, to your point, it’s always nicer to be asked, than told… N’est pas?

Oh, and whether you kick the hive, or not those bees are gonna be pissed, y’all!

Really? I’ve seen some pretty calm bees in the hands of beekeepers on documentaries, but yeah they still wear all that gear!

Bees are normally calm when you’re working (and they’re working; ) and it’s a nice, sunny day… But they don’t like it (this time of year) when the flowers start to slow down and there’s a lot of them hanging around (with nothing to do): and you start to take away their hard-gotten stores of honey. And, of course, some hives are feistier than others…

Wise words Diana. I think we have all had these approaches in our life and I know what works for me! I try the second approach with the kids, but sometimes that doesnt work either ha! Happy Monday. 🙂
