Enjoy when you can, and endure when you must. – Johann von Goethe
Last week Calgary was under a smoky, hazy sky.
We were warned to keep our windows shut in our homes and keep the vents closed in our cars.
The haze was a result of fires burning in Washington and BC. The poor air quality registered off the index.
Some days, I could taste smoke on my tongue.
On the news they compared pictures of Hong Kong and Calgary’s Deerfoot; the main highway that runs north and south.
The images were indistinguishable from each other.
I wasn’t happy about the last vestiges of summer being diffused by smoke, but was amazed by how quickly it became the norm for me.
Something to simply be endured.
The sun during the day and the moon during the night were often red or orange and looked like a scene out of a Sci-fi movie; an other worldly picture of a faraway planet.
Magical, perhaps even beautiful in its own way.
But oh how my heart leapt for joy when the sun’s beautiful light broke through the haze on Friday!

Diana, I was wondering how the smoke was affecting your area. When I saw it on the news, I immediately thought of you and hoped it wasn’t as bad as it looked on my TV! ❤

It was that bad Jennifer. I’ve never seen anything like it. But it’s starting to clear up, thank God. I’m touched you thought of me. HUGS. ❤

Diana, it must be awful, and the reasons behind it are awful too. I’m so relieved it’s starting to clear. Hugs back ❤

The devastation is awful. We sometimes forget sitting here in PA what is going on the pacific coast. It is hard to understand when we are having a normal summer that the west coast is baking in heat, no water and forest fires. Praying daily for all of those involved. Hoping the sun breaking through is a good sign they are starting to get under control.

I remember how we’d sometimes get smoke from nearby forest fires when I lived in Los Angeles. A couple of times they were burning in hills north of the city but along the coast. You could look across the bay and see the fires. From miles away you could see individual flames!

Wow. Yeah Smitty they get a lot of fires there, sorta like BC here, but to see flames from that far – Wow!

When we have wildfires here in Southern California, the smoke–while it’s really irritating–can create those same weirdly beautiful/ominous red sky effects!

Hey Richard thank you for your comment and welcome to TALKTODIANA! Some of the most striking sunrises and sets I have ever seen were the result of pollution! I’d rather have clean air, but… just saying… ❤

The smoke has been awful here in the Seattle area too. The rain this weekend is more than welcome!! I hope the firefighters get a break now and can get those wildfires under control.

You’re absolutely right, it’s lovely to see brighter sun…skies! I can’t imagine people living in Beijiing for years with constant pollution.
Someone at work told me that while driving TransCanada HIghway in Banff-Canmore area..one could not see Mt. Rundle or even Castle Mtn. earlier last wk. Can you imagine?! Not see mountains so close to the highway??

No I cannot imagine that Jean. I did not leave the city last week but I heard the smoke was even worse outside Calgary. ❤
