ON SATURDAY, THE BRIDGELAND COMMUNITY in Calgary, Alberta hosted its inaugural Bridgeland Cultural Festival. And I knew from the moment I’d heard about it, that I wanted to go.
Helga, always game to do anything, met me at the Bridgeland train station and together we walked to 1st Avenue NE to check it out.
Although only one block of the street was closed to cars, the community had a wonderful selection of unique vendors.
I wasn’t even there five minutes when I saw a table with handmade watches and bracelets.
I used to always wear a watch, but these days, it’s just as easy to check the time on my BlackBerry.
Also, back then, I was sort of hippyish…
(In my head, I can hear my daughter asking in disbelief, “Was…?”)
…and wore a lot of leather and denim everything.
Anyway, when I saw this watch I had to have it!
We checked out every booth there while a host of bands and dancers performed on the stage.
Helga purchased some herbal bread, specifically prepared so that one can tear off one strip at a time, to munch on right from the paper bag.
We also checked out all the stores a few blocks in both directions and bought a coffee from a merchant who grows their own beans down south and roasts them right here in Calgary.
Well done Bridgeland, I will be back for your 2nd annual cultural festival!
When we had seen all there was to see, Helga walked with me back to the train station. She then hopped on her bike and headed back to Inglewood while I waited for the downtown train.
I wasn’t in a hurry, so I got off at City Hall Station to walk the mile or two back home. On my way, I took a few more pictures. (below)
All in all, it was a gorgeous summery day to explore my beautiful city. I’m looking forward to the many other events that will be taking place during my favourite season of the year.

What’s your most favourite item purchased at a community festival recently? Do you have cycle tracks in your city?
Love that watch!

haha thanks Jim, although I have a hard time imagining the words Blackberry and quaint being in the same sentence – I’ve heard other words, usually swear words, associated with them! ❤

Groovy, baby! I was sort of a hippie in my teen years with my peace sign medallion, swede wedgies and my macrame bag. 🙂 Love the watch! ❤
I also love a good festival, craft sale, or flea market find. As for summer, it's finding its way to NL as well lately — 24 degrees in Gander when I was there yesterday.

Glad to hear summer is finding you in NL, Jennifer! Hey. Question. Is the ocean ever warm enough to swim in by your place? ❤

Not for me, but Paul does from time to time, as do a few others. I prefer the temperature of a pond (or a pool!).

We do have a bike trail through our town now. Hopefully it will be expanded. I haven’t been to any recent festivals and purchased anything. But I always look!!!

🙂 I actually love the unknown trails best. I like getting to look for new and unknown treasures!!! But the local trail is good for the true and steady bike treat.

This looks like a great festival, Diana! Hippie you. I love it. ❤ I don't know about bike paths in Syracuse because I don't ride a bike. My bad. 😦 I bought dollar food at Taste of Syracuse last weekend! That's the last I purchased. 🙂

Recently only on weekends when the traffic is lighter early morning or on the roads in general. The weather is so irresistible and Nature looks so green. A feat in drier prairie Canada.

Nice watch! I haven’t worn one in decades (nor any kind of accessories — just not my style). And I don’t own a device. I just tell time by the sun… that’s close enough for me. XD

Diana that festival sounds wonderful and it looks like the weather was perfect. I love the watch by the way! Very nice. And great pics. You’ve made me want to visit Calgary now, shall have to make a visit next time I criss the lake 😉 I haven’t been to a festival like yours in such a long time, which means it’s probably time to find one nearby. Oh and we most definitely do have cycle paths in our city, wouldn’t be a Dutch city without them 😉 great that Calgary has them though! That must be pretty rare over there! ❤

Alicia, it was a lot of fun. Calgary actually also has miles of pathways for bikes and walking. Many major cities have cycle tracks downtown, we’re catching up Alicia. I remember seeing them in Berlin in the 70s and thinking it was a cool idea. ❤
