17th Ave SW, Alberta, Calgary, Canada, coffee klatsch, community, Diana Schwenk, fire, Hump Day Chronicles, walk
On Saturday I walked down to the Scotia Centre on Stephen Avenue to meet my friend Helga for coffee. On 4th Street, just before the 9th Avenue overpass, I entered into, what I assumed to be, a huge dust cloud.
It was a windy day, so I surmised the dirt from the construction site on my left was getting caught up by the wind and blown over the street.
Other than that, it was a gorgeous, sunny day, so after our little coffee klatsch, Helga and I walked east on Stephen Avenue.
That’s when Helga noticed it. A plume of smoke was rising in the south. We decided to check it out.
As soon as we turned south onto McLeod Trail, we knew something was up. All four lanes of the one-way street were backed up with traffic – it was a parking lot!
“Man, am I ever glad we’re not in a car,” I mumbled.
When we hit 17th Avenue, we could finally see the source of the fire. A 48-unit condo, still under construction, was engulfed in flames.
Onlookers watched and snapped photos.
“I bet the working crew left the lights on,” said a gruff looking man to Helga. “I’ve seen that start fires at construction sites many a time.”
“I was on Scotsman Hill shooting photos when I saw the fire, so I came down to check it out,” said another man. “I think the propane tanks they use while tarring the roof exploded.”
Later that day, while watching the news, I learned that the apartment building next door had been evacuated after tenants heard a series of explosions.
Last I heard, authorities still don’t know the actual cause of the fire and are asking the public to share any aerial photographs or videos they may have shot.
~ HUMP DAY CHRONICLES ~
Earlier that same day, just after midnight Alpha House, a refuge for people with alcohol and drug dependencies, evacuated their building when a fire broke out. Sadly one man died.

I have this thing where I must always have a “worse fear.” I update my worst fear whenever I move. I have two worst fears in New York City, one for winter and one for summer. If I lived in Alberta, definitely grizzly!

Diana … Here’s a link to the story about the fire at my apartment. I misspoke. Friends of mine came to my workplace to tell me about the fire. http://earth-rider.com/2012/07/14/living-in-the-shadows-part-3/

Wow, Diana, that smoke is intense. I’m so sorry to hear that a man lost his life in one of the fires. As a reporter, I covered many fires – especially in Utica, New York. It’s so unsettling when you lose your home. When I first lived in Syracuse, the apartment next door to mine caught fire when the owner’s son and his friends left a portable heater on. They’d been partying. Firefighters chopped a hole in the wall between our apartments and I lived there without electricity for about a month. I’m not sure I was supposed to live there, but I had no where else to go. Scary!

Wow – what a story Judy! When we had the flood in 2013. Many folks were evacuated. A lady I know decided to stay in her 2nd floor condo without power against the evacuation orders. Same story, she and her cat had no where to go. She even took in another lady who’s street level apartment had been flooded. I guess there’s no place like home, huh? ❤

I also had a miniature poodle at the time. So we both had no where else to go. Fortunately, the apartment was livable again in about a month. 😉

During the month I had no electricity – no, I did not. I suspect the landlady knew and may have felt guilty because her son and his friends caused the fire. They were partying in an apartment that was supposed to be vacant.

I wasn’t home when the fire broke out. I was working a 2nd job. Some one at work – maybe the p.r. manager – broke the news to me.

Diana,
Sorry to hear of the displacement of those poor unforunate residents due to the fire.
If anyone can remember the angst from all that is involved in making a planned move into a new residence; just imagine it forced upon you in an instant, without any idea of where you will go, and under the worst circumstances.

That’s awful, Diana. The loss of a man’s life is a tragedy. I hope they discover the cause of both the fires in your city.
You did get some striking pictures of the construction fire’s billowing smoke, Diana, and the haze it left behind. It scarred a sunny day in Calgary. Too bad. 😦

Yes Mark, I was sorry to hear of the death of that man at Alpha House as well. My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.
Thanks Mark! Oddly enough, the smoke seemed concentrated to the area. I live about 10 blocks away from the site of the fire and the air was clear at home. Weird, eh? ❤
