I had never heard of it before a couple of days ago, but this past Monday was Blue Monday. Usually occurring on the Monday of the last full week of January, Blue Monday is the most depressing day of the year, at least so says a 2005 press release from holiday company Sky Travel.
I’m not sure I felt any bluer than my usual winter blues on Monday. As a matter of fact, near day’s end I was cheered up with a sunset that looked as if the sky was on fire. Seen below as viewed from my balcony.
You know what they say, Pink sky at night, a sailor’s delight – even here in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains!
I have to admit that January and February are usually my toughest months to endure. By this time I’ve usually had it up to my armpits with winter. And to top it off with the proverbial cherry, we’ll soon have I-can’t-feel-my-feet-and-hands-my-lips-are-frozen-to-my-teeth-and-it-hurts-my-lungs-to-inhale-the-air temperatures!
Although shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures can bring us down here in the Northern Hemisphere, Smitty over at Logos con carne would remind us that the days are indeed getting longer now, so hang in there!
And take courage my northern hemispheric friends, the same geniuses who brought us the most depressing day of the year, also promise us the happiest day of the year. (Some time in the third week of June)
Until then, perhaps you would benefit from some chillaxing Canadian yoga as brought to you today by our nation’s beloved satirical News show 22 Minutes. You won’t regret watching! 😉

How’s winter panning out for you? Were you extra down on Monday?
I don’t mean to whine, Diana. But it dropped to 39 degrees tonight in Florida. Yeah, yeah … I know you got it much worse, but this IS 39 degrees in Florida, man. Thanks for the giggle. I never thought I’d laugh during a yoga exercise. She is a hoot. 😆

Judy it was 58f in Calgary yesterday and 50f today, so whine all you like! I’ll try to leave the door open Canada-side in the hopes that some of our warmth will make it to you. 😉

Bless you, Diana. Our thermostat says it’s 52 degrees outside tonight but it feels much colder. (The paper predicted 39 degrees.) 😉

Oh, so that’s why my ears were burning! 😀
I can’t say Jan 21st was anything especially depressing (never heard of Blue Monday other than just going back to work), but I do find February to be the blue month. As you said, sick to death of winter and being confined indoors and breathing roasted air. I can’t wait until I can open windows again!!

February IS the hardest month for me too Smitty. Weird because the days have been getting longer….

Yeah, the sun is finally high enough to shine down through my skylight and into the living room. From mid-December to mid-January it only hits the sidewalls of the (rather deep) skylight well in my ceiling. I think it was two weeks ago I notice a ray of sunshine escaping the well and shining down.

Ugh! It sounds like fireplace and hot cocoa time in your neck of the woods. 🙂

It was 10 degrees here today. Mark recently wrote about driving 70 miles to Watertown where it was 10 degrees. The difference is here it is 10c not 10f. 10c is 50f. I’m always delighted when it is warmer here than somewhere in the States! BTW they’re calling for 16 degrees here on Sunday, that’s 61f! (sorry Mark) ❤

Oh, that’s beautiful weather! The only bad part that happens when it fluctuates between cold and warm like that is it can wreak havoc on one’s sinuses.

I am fortunate then, because that doesn’t happen to me! It makes me so happy! ❤

Even though it is Summer here I can still get down Diana I don’t need a special day for that. My way is to be grateful for the small wins and move on from there. Winter is coming and I love the change of seasons. Hope you see a big thaw soon.

I’m prepped for another 2-3 months of winter here. It’s strange but I’m not struggling as much with winter as I used to Kath. I think I may be happier! ❤

Funny how things like the weather don’t bother us as much Diana if everything is running smooth in our lives.

I’m trying to keep myself busy. It’s seems to make the winter go faster. Last week-end my husband and I painted our living room.

Maybe you and your husband would like to paint my place?? haha. Seriously though, keeping busy does make time go by quicker, doesn’t it Sheryl? ❤

Me neither, until recently when I heard it on the news. Probably wouldn’t apply to you in the southern hemisphere though… ❤

Nice photo, Diana! The days are getting longer, minute by minute, so i take heart in that. But January and February are a tough slog when it’s below zero a lot of nights. The inner bear takes over and wants to hibernate!

Loved waking up to this post Diana. The video is great and gave me a good laugh. We sometimes need a break from depressing mondays and cold weather. I am glad you found that beautiful sunset to remind you that life is always changing. 🙂

It’s true Karen! Some things don’t get better over night but I have found that a good night’s sleep and a new day actually can make a difference if you let it. And then add to that another new day and another… ❤

Just the usual mid-winter blues, Diana. On this Wednesday, 1:41 p.m. EST, it is 20 F, the sky is lightly-cloud blue and I can hear birds chirping away like mad. And the days, they are getting longer. So I will try to be optimistic. Until the snow flies and the temperature dips below 0 again.

You learn something new every day, Diana. I was oblivious to Monday being anything but another ordinary winter day.
And the video is hilarious – I saw it last night on my pvr. Cathy Jones, one of our province’s (and country’s!) treasures. 🙂
