MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE I was a teenager once, or maybe it’s because I raised a daughter…
…but when I read this quote I thought of women and how we compare ourselves to impossible ideals.
When you look into a mirror, what do you see?
Are your eyes too close together? Too small? Do you have uneven skin tone? Are your teeth crooked? Too yellow? Is your nose too big? Are your lips to thin?
If I looked at you, I’m sure I would see beauty. But you are so much more than that.
When you look inside your heart, what do you see?
Are you true to your word? Are you kind? Are you gentle? Are you motivated by love? Are you mindful of others? Are you helpful? Generous?
You are worthy of respect. You bring value to this world. You are a glorious miracle.

Yes! It’s important to remember that we really are so much more than what’s on the outside. But it’s hard to remember, when the world makes such a big deal about looks.

I think it’s critical that both men and women who care about our daughters need to be, throughout their lives, reasonably but repeatedly, vocally condemning of the hidden “ugliness” of exploitation and objectification of women, (especially in the fashion industry), while at the same time teaching our daughters what IS truly beautiful (generosity, compassion, kindness, self-control, excellence in valid achievement) and noticing and validating their acts of beauty. Also, helping them see the wonder and beauty in their individual (non-idealized, but real, authentic, useful) human bodies.
That’s what I think. xo

I can see the pressure is intense on Women. Being male it’s not easy to connect with what women actually feel, but yourwords Diana speak to us all and so we do meet at a common place of struggle and empathy..
