There’s another way to survive. Mutual trust…and help. ~ Captain Kirk in ‘Day of the Dove’
Kirk laughs with McCoy and Kang, and the alien eventually departs.
In the ‘Day of the Dove’ Star Trek episode, Kirk and his crew find themselves in an intense battle with the Klingons.
Each side suspects the other of sabotage.
The more they fight, the more their hatred grows, all the while they unwittingly give up who they intrinsically are; feeding an alien entity exactly what it needs to grow stronger.
The stronger the alien becomes, the more it is able to cause dissention between them.
Eventually, they figure out what is going on and cease their warring. The alien (Hatred) loses its power and hope for mutual trust is restored.
Sometimes we find ourselves fighting so hard against something that we forget what it is we stand for.
If we clue in to what is really going on and strive to work together, we too can find common ground and build trust, not only surviving, but actually thriving.

For your other blog you might like to cite the award-winning episode, City on the Edge of Forever, where Kirk tells Edith (Joan Collins!) that the three greatest words in the universe are,… “Let me help.”

It’s considered one of the best. Kirk and Spock go back through the Guardian of Time to 1930s Earth to find McCoy who’s accidentally screwed up history by saving Edith Keeler (Joan Collins) from being run over by a truck.
Kirk falls in love with her (of course), yet has to prevent McCoy from saving her.
McCoy: I could have saved her! Jim, do you know what you just did!!
Spock: He knows, doctor… He knows.
Also has Spock’s great line about “using stone knives and bear skins” (to construct a mnemonic memory circuit).
Best. Episode. Ever! 🙂

I ❤ those old Star Treks. I agree…and don't. Yes, now that I'm older I see how important approach is, how you say something can mean more than what you say. At the same time, if I have something to say I'm going to say it, I'm too old and cranky to be coy. 😉

haha, I guess it depends on how important the outcome of a situation is to me. I blurt things out too but when I’m trying to foster collaboration for a particular end then I place great importance on the approach needed to get there.

Good lesson, I used to watch startreck in Germany as child, and loved it. Specially when I found out that the spaceship was built with washingup bottles. 😊

I mean the plastic bottles where washing up liquid is being sold in. Apparently they had them on each side of the model of the Enterprise.
I loved the Flintstones too.. “Families Feuerstein ” it was. 😄

“If we clue in …”. Isn’t that such a powerful little secret. I think it’s especially true when we apply it to what is going on inside ourselves. When we ask: “What am I doing?” “What am I feeling?” All without attribution to others actions. Others don’t make us feel angry, sad, despondent. We just are.

So true Ian, I’ve been learning that so much on a personal level.
For example, I like doing. I like figuring out what next steps are and then doing.
I like working with groups of people and using their talents to get there.
I’m not patient. Sometimes, there are glitches and we’re not moving as fast as I would like and I can feel my heart racing. That’s when I step back now and ask myself what’s going on within me and usually I have an aha moment when I can name it and then I’m peacefully on track again!

But you’re right, we do get distracted, we live in the age of distraction, when’s the last time someone talked about the captured girls in Nigeria? Part of staying true to our mission is to simplify our lives.

The girls in Nigeria are still top of mind in the news here in Canada. It seems we only really step in when a country has oil though. I mean look at the genocide situation in Rwanda in the 90’s, how is it we almost completely ignored that?

The wisdom of Kirk, Spock, Bones and crew. Thanks for beaming me up with this one, Diana. This was a show my dad and I liked to watch together when it was first run, in the wayback.
Your question today is a tough one. I do not have a quick response. I find myself more reflective by the day, softening on some issues about my life and life in general as I feel older, but hardening on others. Complete change, though? Hmmmmm.

Yes, approach is certainly more flexible than stance, Diana. I now try to think more and act less reflexively. That’s a change in approach.

(smiling) I remember in the 80’s, I would brush my teeth at 11pm and get ready for bed. At 11:30pm the old Star Trek reruns would come on and we watched it in bed every week night!
