“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” – Mark Twain
Other quotes along this line of thought are:
“When I was younger, I admired intelligent people, now I admire kind people.”
Or “The highest result of education is tolerance.”
Or Dr. Seuss’s, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
or the one I coined in the title!
So even if you know everything in your area of expertise. (You don’t)
Even if you have a Ph.D. (Big whoop!)
And even if by some magic wand you suddenly know all; if you don’t care about people, it’s worthless.
And what exactly does it mean to care?
To care means to love.
A word that seems awkward outside of one’s inner circle. Why can’t it apply to our co-workers? Our subordinates? The cashier and pizza delivery guy? Love means you want the best for others, whether at home, at the office, or out and about.
Take all that knowledge, those skills, those great lessons and lovingly apply them to everything you do and everyone you work and play with.

I like your take at the end of your post “Take all that knowledge, those skills, those great lessons and lovingly apply them” which is a message of COMBINING your knowledge with love rather than choosing love over knowledge. Another way of looking at it is maybe to stop hoarding your knowledge or keeping your skills to yourself but to share them.

Great quotes. “The highest result of education is tolerance.” And I would add: humility.

I think you hit the nail on the head – we have to open our hearts to love all of those around us.
I think this is the very reason we feel so separated most of the time. We think that love stops with those we deem worthy and we don’t realize that the very act of holding love back from everyone/thing is equivalent to holding it back from ourselves.

Oh, I care tons! But being more a “fathering” type than a “mothering” type, people seem to perceive me as not caring. It has to do with caring more about someone’s growth and success than about their feelings at the moment — like any good coach or father. “No pain, no gain,” and growth is usually at least a little painful.
And that I do care so much and am perceived as not is really painful to me.

Sorry to hear that Smitty. It’s always been evident to me that you care.
For whatever it’s worth, something I’ve employed in the past is to watch how another expresses the way they care, so that when I want them to know I care, I do it in the way they express it and then they know.

It’s a shame there aren’t more people like you in the world. I’ve spent a lifetime striving to meet people on their ground and in their terms; seems like it never happens the other way. I’ve never met anyone who wanted to be part of my world.

Great post Diana and I love the quote (which I have shamelessly stolen)!
The most important concept I’ve learned lately is that of “listening on channel two” Channel one means I listen to the words being spoken to me for what they mean to me. Channel two means I listen to the words being spoken to me for what they mean to my conversation partner. That simple shift in stance is so meaningful in showing we care.
