“People say grass is greener on the other side of the fence. It’s green where you water it, so water what’s important!”
I read this quote within days of seeing this picture depicting spring in Canada. I knew immediately I loved them both!
I much prefer the above quote to ‘the grass is always greener on the other side…’ because the latter refers to our tendency to desire what others have, resulting in our circumstances seeming less than adequate in comparison.
Worse yet, we just give into envy, kick up the dust on our own patch of parched ground and stare longingly at the grass on the other side.
Do we seriously think that their grass got green without effort?
Isn’t it time for us to be grateful for what we have on our side and start caring for (watering) the things that are most important.
Maybe it’s time to take a hard look at the things we’ve been neglecting and give them some attention.
What’s important to you in your life?

What needs watering on your patch of ground?

This might sound contrarian but I’ve always found the grass on my patch green enough. When it gets parched, I work on it to make it greener.
Peace,
Eric

It doesn’t sound contrarian at all, it sounds kind of brilliant. Good for you Eric!

I’m happier when I focus on my own life, and don’t worry about what is on the other side of the fence or “try to keep up with the Jones.”

I very much agree with Sheryl here and was going to say something similar.
As long as I’m focused on my own patch of grass, I’ll figure er’ out! 😀

Love that quote and I had heard a similar one sometimes ago which resonated with me a lot. I think people sometimes give up what they have for something they think is better only to find out paradise needs watering too.

PS. And also one can cut oneself beyond repair climbing through the barbed wire fence to get to the greener grass 🙂

Thank you for your wisdom here, Diana. Even though I thought I was caring for son, Ming, I was actually more concerned about husband, Ants. Your post has reminded me to get more in tune with MIng – thank you!

Love the picture! And I fully agree that we get what we want on our side of the fence only when we tend to it ourselves. According I Cheryl Crow “It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you’ve got.”

Love that song Ian! I’m starting to get the impression you have a large library of music. There’s something about music and stories that connect us by helping us to relate and can really drive a point across.
