A week and a half ago, I invited you to see your life with all the pressures and to-do’s in it, imagine it all gone, and then bring back your top 5.
The purpose of this exercise was to ensure that we include our priorities into our schedules. I enjoyed your comments and lists very much. As promised, here’s my list.
5. My Mission/Purpose
I mean The Other Bottom Line of course, but it’s bigger than that. I need to ignite the power and passion in others and relate with, promote, and speak community wherever I am, whatever I’m doing. That’s the great thing about having a vision and mission statement; it reflects who you are, what you do and how you do it. It also serves as a ‘measuring stick’ when making decisions.
4. My Health
I’m intentional about the food I eat. I try to exercise and get a good 8 hours of sleep. I could do better and I’m going to be more diligent about keeping health on my list of priorities.
3. Necessities of Life
I don’t need a lot to be happy. Some of the best things in life are totally free. I do need certain basics though: I need food. Shelter. Clothing. To love and be loved. To feel safe and secure. I will work hard to do what needs to be done in order to provide the necessities of life for myself.
2. My Tribe
I love the word Tribe. It saves me from long run-on sentences like: I really appreciate my family, friends, co-workers, blogging community, mailman, acquaintances, mechanic, grocer, doctor, internet provider, dancing partners, hair dresser, dentist, contacts…all those who knowingly and unknowingly contribute to my sense of belonging and joy – and hopefully, I contribute to theirs. My tribe is more important than any inanimate thing.
1. My God
My Creator. He who knew and loved me before I was formed in my mother’s womb. I will see Him in the wonder of snowflakes, the beauty of sunsets and in every loving act. And I will be grateful for all my blessings.
I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions. It makes sense to me though, to give these 5 priorities a prominent place in my life before I even attempt to schedule in all the other things that would demand my attention.

Actually of course ‘necessities’ SHOULD have been on my list too. It is interesting that we do not crave our needs until we do not have them, and because I currently have them (the necessities), it was not something that I am currently paying attention to. ( I DO know what it is to be without them though). Therefore, it seems that I did not play your game 100% correctly as I did not come up with a completely blank slate. I am not sure which of my five I would give up for the necessities though….. 🙂

Ah yes, choices and purpose can be melded to make room for the basics. So now we have four the same. Yay!

It is a great philosophy to make new year priorities, rather than new year resolutions.
Thanks for the inspiration (and I note that we match up three out of five) :).

Oh man I’m just happy to wake up in the morning and have a good day… I can’t do lists, I’d never keep them, but good list you have there and you are the type of person that will keep it… Have a good year Diana, look forward to following you all the way through it…

haha It’s easy for me to remember what’s important to me. I find when I write things like this down, then even if there is no further attempt to say… develop strategies to help me make progress….just having the intention out there affects my decisions and the things I choose to do support the desired outcome. Make sense?

This is wonderful Diana! Thanks so much for sharing. I too adore the word Tribe. I also appreciate how you are using the word ‘priorities’ instead of the (dreaded!) word ‘resolutions’. I love this post. 😀 Thanks again! Gina xo

Thanks Gina! I think of resolutions more like: I’m going to quit smoking or I’m going to lose 20 lbs, etc… I guess what I want to do is leave room to pay attention to the things that really matter to me (so to speak)

I love that. ‘Leaving room’ to pay attention to what matters most. Wise words indeed.

a good post, I think it is important to know who we are, and examine our priorities to be sure what we want and what we do align.

Thank you Bill! Hey I saw a woman on a bike the other day – a mountain bike – and her tires were huge and knobby, I mean huge like a small motor bike! As I walked toward her I thought to myself – that bike must weigh a ton! I asked her if it helps as our roads were covered in about 5 inches of slush. She said yeah but she’s discovering muscles she didn’t know she had… wish I’d had my phone with me to take a picture of it!
