200 words, CS Lewis, curious, describe with words, Diana Schwenk, Diana's Enormous Book of Quotes, God, heaven, summer, sun
Looking for God–or Heaven–by exploring space is like reading or seeing all Shakespeare’s plays in the hope that you will find Shakespeare as one of the characters ~ C.S. Lewis
If C.S. Lewis knew what heaven was like, could he describe it to me?
Would it be akin to me describing summer to someone who has never seen the light of day?
Someone who lives in a controlled environment and is limited by his experiences?
Which words could I use to describe the warmth of the sun on my skin
the glare of the sun in my eyes
the itch of a mosquito bite
or the way the breeze feels when it blows through my hair.
Words would not suffice.
I suppose I could rub his arm until his skin heats up so he could feel warmth on his skin.
I could shine a bright light into his face until he shields his eyes.
I could lightly skim his arm with a feather until he scratches himself.
And madly fan him with a piece of paper until his hair moves.
But that wouldn’t even begin to describe the glory of summer, would it?

Isn’t it part of the con trick that you can’t report back on what heaven is like?

It would be spring or summer.
I know 3 different people well, who had near death experiences. And it’s all similar: they saw a white light at the end. I heard these personal stories face to face over the last 20 years. One of them from my partner, who nearly died as a child.

Thank you Elizabeth. Yes and my heart has received the benefit of its yearning. Yesterday and today we’ve had summer-like weather! Tomorrow it’s back to more typical weather for this time of year but I have thoroughly enjoyed these last couple of day! 🙂

Quite a profound post which resonates with me in trying to describe something that the other person has not experienced. How frustrating and difficult this can be. Yet you describe THAT so well (ie the difficulty) and eloquently.
And while you describe it, the visions of a lazy hot summer’s day does appear in my mind. Well done.
(And I think perhaps, your heart is yearning for those lazy summer days 🙂 ).

It’s a freak high pressure over us, today it will be 26c (79f) but then the next day more spring like temperatures of 15c (59f). It did wonders for my countenance though. 🙂

Wow! It is cooler here today but it did reach 23c in central NL yesterday. Unfortunately we were driving home from St. John’s which takes 4 hours, so we experienced most of it in the car.
