A generation ago, a clever idea could run and run. We talked about Space Food Sticks and Tang and Gilligan’s Island and the Batmobile for years, even though there certainly wasn’t a lot of depth. Hit movies and books stayed on the bestseller lists for months or even years! ~ Seth Godin
Would you agree that we don’t really take time to celebrate anymore?
By the time a plan comes to fruition
we’re three steps ahead and have forgotten to rejoice in our achievements
or the joyful things that have surprised us along the way.
It saddens me.
A new idea or new way of thinking comes around
and the pendulum swings hard right and we either jump aboard or get left behind.
For example, we know that change can be good.
But has change become an ideal we practice just for the sake of change?
What happened to “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it“?
Ignoring the now…
forgetting to acknowledge the joy of the moment
is robbing us of the sheer happiness of important milestones in our personal and professional lives.
I don’t want the ‘next new thing’ to diminish the significance of the ‘right now.’
Do you?

The interweb river is wide, deep and fast! It’s not just that today’s cool links are so quickly replaced with tomorrow’s cool links. It’s that there are so many links. There is a vast amount of content and it whips past at a quick rate.
It’s hard for a Gilligan’s Island or Batmobile to stand out (or even be noticed), let alone be remembered!
I’ve been noticing how utterly forgettable most movies these days are. They crank them out like bags of potato chips these days, and they have about the same quality.

Indeed! It’s watching the older movies that makes you realize how shallow the product has become these days.

Agree completely. I believe it’s important to be flexible, and accept change without growing stagnant, but equally important to appreciate the moment we’re in. I think part of this grows from the enormous array of choices we now have. I’m a big believer in if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and don’t rush my life away đŸ˜‰

I love this – it seems to me today that with multiple deadlines that there is no time to celebrate because you are busy managing the next crisis. I long for times when you can just live in this moment now.

yes and especially in the work environment. But this is exactly where a little celebrating would inspire hard work, loyalty and dedication for the next project!

So true – it’s hard for people to embrace that principle when time is money – celebrating is really an investment in your people.

Ahh, missed your blog and you Diana. Agree. We are in a constant need to achieve/change, that we forget to be happy for the achievement. It saddens me. I’ve noticed a tendency in kindergarten, parents driving their kids to activities after 8 hours of playing/noise (also weekends fully booked). Achieve. Do. Go. We forget to just BE. Haha. Now I have an excuse to cozy on my sofa (teaching my kids to BE :P)

I have a theory that we stunt the imagination and creativity of children when we book every minute of their time. It’s good to be bored. It’s good to figure out what to do with yourself. That’s where imagination kicks in! Don’t you think?

Important for Children too, to be allowed to plateau, to pause and celebrate a milestone for a week or so, or however long they need.
While the media would have us believe we are on a treadmill, lots of lives are lead at a calmer pace, moving on when the time is right.
