“Fishing is boring, unless you catch an actual fish, and then it is disgusting” Dave Barry
Man can I relate to Dave on this one! Years ago, I was invited to go fishing with my friend Cindy and her Dad. I’d never been before and frankly I was worried about it. Why?
B. I tossed and turned all night about having to put a worm on the hook.
C. My fear of looking foolish and cowardly.
Usually my fears are worse than the actual event. But in this case, the actual event was worse. When I found out that the worm had to be applied on the hook as one hangs curtains on a rod, I was mortified. There was NO way I was doing that even if it meant that I was a coward! Thankfully Cindy’s Dad, upon seeing the shade of green my face was beginning to turn, put the worm on the hook for me. I did catch a Sunfish that day but declined the dinner invitation that evening. I’ve never gone fishing since.
What have you been on the hook for? How did you handle it?

Is that the Dave Barry article that talks about taking his son fishing? That was always a favorite of mine (I think I have a photocopy somewhere in my paper archives).
For me, it was leeches. Slimy wriggly things. And when you grab one, it grabs you, because, after all, it sees you as dinner. First time I tried to use a leech, that happened, and I freaked and flung it that sucker into the next county. My buddy, the expert fisherman, nearly hurt himself laughing. Over time, though, I learned to love the leech. They are great bait, and I caught some nice fish with them.
(Not a fish eater? Not even fresh lake fish? Pity; you’re missing a treat!)

I don’t know what story that quote originally came from. Truth is I used to play online cryptograms and any quote I liked I just copied into a word document. Later when I started my blog, I started the DEBQ Sundays and that was one of those quotes that brought a memory back to me. No I don’t like fish or seafood. I do eat tuna in a can and an old boyfriend used to make really chewy trout jerky that I enjoyed. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your leech story – I hate them too! 😉

I was on the hook for touching a snake during a wildlife presentation to my class. I’m petrified of snakes…I did it, though, but I refuse to touch now. It’s not a fear I have any desire to get over:)
